The Folk & the Lore: Wanderlust

    Saturday May 16, 2015 / 6 – 8 pm

From the creative mind of Jessi LeMay comes the storytelling and narrative filmmaking project The Folk & the Lore. This multimedia project aims to collect, archive, and tell stories from Reno and throughout the region through photography, short films, and live storytelling events that will be held regularly at the Nevada Museum of Art. Together, we believe that when you know your neighbor’s story, not only do you feel more connected to your community, but those stories become part of your own. Join this premiere event for an evening of storytelling and films based on the holidays. Doors open at 5pm for social hour and chez louie cash bar. Stories begin at 6pm. This month’s theme is Wanderlust—what happens when you leave Reno, hit the road, and explore new worlds.

    More Than Honey

    Sunday May 17, 2015 / 3 – 4:30 pm

Fifty years ago, Einstein had already insisted on the symbiotic relationship binding bees as pollen gatherers to mankind: “If bees were to disappear from the globe,” he predicted, “mankind would only have four years left to live.” Over the past 15 years, colonies of bees have collapsed around the world, but the causes of this disaster remain unknown. Depending on the world region, 50% to 90% of all local bees have disappeared, and this epidemic is still spreading from beehive to beehive – all over the planet. Everywhere, the same scenario is repeated: billions of bees leave their hives, never to return. No bodies are found in the immediate surroundings, and no visible predators can be located.

More Than Honey explores the phenomenon, and some of the theories as to why it’s happening.

    Meet the Artist: Michelle Lassaline

    Friday May 22, 2015 / 12 – 12:45 pm

The central theme of artist Michelle Lassaline’s work can be described by the Portuguese word saudade, which roughly translates to “homesickness,” but also carries the meaning of invented memories. For example, you may feel saudade for your childhood home, a place much grander in your memory than the building that now sits at the same address. Saudade is the homesickness for somewhere that never existed except in the form of that fleeting land called childhood. Learn about these ideas of place and their relation to this emerging artist’s work.
