    Doug Groves on Craft and Tradition of the Nevada Buckaroo

    Friday December 2, 2016 / 12 – 1 pm

    Recipient of the Nevada Governor’s Arts Award and the Nevada Heritage Award, Great Basin buckaroo and braider Doug Groves makes finely crafted artisan horse gear.  Learning rawhide braiding from peers in the bunkhouse and beyond, he now passes on the skills and techniques for turning rawhide into beautiful and functional gear.  Join Doug as he discusses the history of rawhide, its traditional uses as horse gear, and how our ranching history is passed on with this skill through stories and folklore.

    Collector Barbara L. Gordon on A Shared Legacy

    Saturday December 3, 2016 / 2 – 3 pm

    Join Barbara L. Gordon as she shares her journey as a collector navigating the wonderfully intuitive and accessible designs, colors and shapes that make up American Folk Art. From her first purchase of a particularly elegant birdhouse with a green painted tin roof, plucked from a row of items in a country field, to her triumphant and long awaited acquisition of Edward Hicks’ masterpiece, The Peaceable Kingdom, Gordon discusses the thrill of the hunt and the passion and discipline it takes to build a world class collection.

    Educator Evening

    Wednesday December 7, 2016 / 4 – 6 pm

    Local educators are invited to this FREE special series on the first Wednesday of every month (excluding January and July). Join Charles N. Mathewson Director of Education Marisa Cooper for a presentation, discussion and activity based on the Museum’s collections and current exhibitions as they relate to teaching and the Nevada Academic Content Standards.

    A light reception will follow the presentation. Teacher in-service credit is available for participating in the Educator Evenings. Earn 0.5 teacher in-service credit for attending five Educator Evenings and 1.0 credit for attending ten during August 1 through July 31 timeframe. Please check with the State of Nevada to see if credit may be applied to your area of licensure.

    Educator Evenings are sponsored by the Nell J. Redfield Foundation, Reno Orthopaedic Clinic, McGowan and SWITCH.

    Eric Freyer on Raw Wood and Craft

    Friday December 9, 2016 / 12 – 1 pm

    Freyer believes that wood is one of nature’s riches gifts. It can be as light and luminescent as water or as dense and opaque as stone. Sculpted by a craftsman, wood expresses and inspires emotion by transcending its function to touch the soul. Join local wood worker Eric Freyer as he discusses the process behind creating studio furniture and the importance of craft and tradition in the community.

    Art Afternoon: Workshop and Social for Seniors

    Friday December 9, 2016 / 1 – 3 pm

    Seniors are invited to spend the afternoon at the Museum. Enjoy a guided tour and a studio art class along with light refreshments. Monthly tours and projects are designed for participants of all levels of experience and offer an engaging and interactive experience. These monthly sessions are held on the second Friday of each month. Registration is available online or day of.

    Museum School Open House and Hands ON! Second Saturdays

    Early Childhood Education Roundtable

    Thursday December 15, 2016 / 5:45 – 7:15 pm

    Educators are invited to these FREE monthly roundtables, which provide participants an opportunity to interact with art and each other. Principles of design, interactive activities, and implications for teaching and learning inform the discussion about dynamic multi-modal learning that results from creative play and inquiry-based early childhood experiences. Registration is required. For questions, please contact Leah Sanders, curriculum coach at UNR.

    The Nevada Woodchucks are dedicated to teaching the skills of woodworking to Northern Nevada.  Through the sharing of ideas, accomplishments, techniques and woodworking projects, this organization is keeping traditional craft alive and sharing the joy of handmade toys with children in the community.  Join Woodchucks President and avid woodworker Rick Barbieri for a lively discussion of toys, tools and community.
