Museum School Class Schedule

The E.L. Cord Museum School of the Nevada Museum of Art is now accepting enrollment for the Winter 2010 class schedule. Classes are limited in size, therefore early registration is recommended. Scholarships are available for all ages. Please call the Museum for details at 775.329.3333 ex 260.

    DRAWING THE FIGURE

    Thursdays, March 18 to April 25 / 9:00AM - 12:00PM

    The focus of this life drawing course is the nude human figure. Students start each class with gesture drawings and then proceed to longer poses resulting in detailed renderings of the human form. The instructor will address anatomy, line, shading and composition through demonstrations and critiques.

    PAINTING: OIL LANDSCAPES IN THE STUDIO

    Thursdays, March 18 to April 22 / 6:00PM - 9:00PM

    Learn plein air techniques in-studio for the upcoming outdoor season. Working from references, learn the art of crafting a small color sketch ("pochade") in oils and how a limited palette enhances color harmony and simplifies mixing. Increase your painting speed by blocking-in and mixing color quickly to produce three sketches per class. This class is for students who have experience with mixing color or beginning painting.

    AIRBRUSH

    Wednesdays, March 24 to May 5 / 5:30PM - 8:00PM

    Learn intensive airbrush techniques through step-by-step demonstrations to create stylized or realistic artwork, to enhance car exteriors, signs, and much more. Explore equipment, materials, paints, freehand application, color gradation, and rendering texture. Former students have the option to sign up for the last four weeks in order to learn advanced techniques. A compressor, airbrushes, and paints will be supplied at no cost to students for use in the classroom.

    PORTRAIT DRAWING

    Tuesdays, April 13 to May 18 / 6:00PM - 9:00PM

    Draw portraits from clothed models while learning about facial structure, proportion and obtaining a likeness. The hands will also be studied. Use line, tone, value and composition to improve your drawing skills.

    Improve your life drawing abilities while working freely from a nude model in this open studio. The instructor will be present to coordinate class and offer instruction when requested. Both male and female models will be drawn.

    Enjoy the versatility of wet media and learn techniques using felt tip pens, pen and ink, ink washes, watercolor and gouache. Make drawings from observation and learn traditional and contemporary approaches.

    SCULPTING: ANIMALS

    Mondays, May 3 to June 14 / 6:00PM - 9:00PM

    Create sculptures of your favorite animals using an easy-to-use, artist-quality oil clay. Incorporate geometric shapes, textures, and blending. Work with Mischell Riley, who is featured in a sculpting show on public television in Europe. Purchase 2 two-pound blocks of Chavant oil clay in class for an additional cost of $20.

    WATCHING FILMS WITH A CRITICAL EYE

    Thursdays, May 6 to May 27 / 6:00PM - 9:00PM

    Film lovers will learn to recognize and appreciate the five key elements of a memorable film with local independent filmmaker and film critic Scott Birmingham. Watch clips in the classroom and a feature film in the Museum’s Prim Theater; then discuss the importance of the elements of story, storytelling, acting/performance, editing/pacing, and ending.

    Understanding the properties of how we see color and to translate that knowledge in oil paints will be the focus of this class. It will cover value, color harmony, composition, and the importance of edges to produce small studies that can be use as references for larger paintings.
