Museum School Class Schedule

The E.L. Cord Museum School of the Nevada Museum of Art is now accepting enrollment for the Winter 2010 class schedule. Classes are limited in size, therefore early registration is recommended. Scholarships are available for all ages. Please call the Museum for details at 775.329.3333 ex 260.

    WATERCOLOR: SPRING TULIPS

    Saturday March 27, 2010 / 10:00AM - 5:00PM

    Celebrate the coming of spring by painting a bouquet of different colored tulips in watercolor. Learn to arrange flowers for a strong composition while studying painting and sketching techniques to create soft and sharp edges. Bring a sack lunch or dine in Café Musée.

    Required Supplies: -sketchbook (9" x 12" spiral bound)
    -pencils: HB, 6B
    -pencil sharpener
    -kneaded eraser

    Watercolor Tubes (preferably transparent colors)
    Bring your paints if you have them already. Winsor & Newton, Daniel Smith (Quinacradone series), MaimeriBlu, Holbein and Da Vinci are good brands.
    -Basic colors: Permanent Yellow Lemon (Holbein)or Winsor Lemon (not Winsor & Newton Lemon Yellow Nickel Titanate -- this is opaque), Opera (Holbein) or Permanent Rose, Alizarin Crimson, Cobalt Teal Blue (Daniel Smith) or Manganese Blue Hue, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Viridian, Hooker's Green Deep

    Brushes: sable is the best, but synthetic brushes are find like Robert Simmons white sables (good quality synthetic brushes are better than cheap natural hair brushes!)
    -rounds in the following sizes: #6, #10 or #12
    -1" flat brush
    -bristle or nylon 1/2" flat brush for lifting
    -small nylon brush for masking fluid

    -Paper: Arches 140 lb or 300 lb cold press, 9" x 12" (Arches watercolor block is fine)

    -art board sized to fit your paper with tape. A piece of foam core will work. 300 lb paper can be stapled on a board.

    -palette: studio type with a cover such as the brands John Pike's or Robert Wood's.

    -2 water containers
    -paper towels
    -cotton rags
    -spray bottle
    -Perception Kit (a set of value scale, viewfinder, values visualizer that you can purchase from the instructor for $13)

    Suggested Supplies: -Optional watercolors: Quinacradone Red or Quinacradone Magenta, Quinacradone Gold (all Quinacradone colors are from Daniel Smith)
    -masking fluid (Winsor & Newton)
    -bar of soap
    -masking fluid pickup or masking tape
    -graphite paper
    -mechanical pencil
    -tracing paper
    -small hair dryer

    Instructor Notes: Good paint, good brushes and good paper are the three big keys to success!

    Discover the satisfaction of making your own jewelry and create a variety of finished pieces. Travel with the instructor to Reno Bead Shop to explore and purchase materials. Returning students can refine their skills and get new inspiration and help with projects.

    PRINTMAKING: MONOTYPES

    Saturday April 24, 2010 / 10:00AM - 5:00PM

    Create monotypes, one of the most painterly and instantaneous forms of printmaking. Use various inks and other drawing and painting media on a Plexiglas plate to print beautiful, one-of-a-kind images with a printing press. A $10 materials fee is due to the instructor at the beginning of class – no additional materials are required.

    WATERCOLOR: TROPICAL BIRD

    Saturday May 29, 2010 / 10:00AM - 5:00PM

    Paint a colorful macaw in its rainforest environment. Students will create a long vertical composition and learn how to lead the eye of the viewer to the focal point. Use value studies to make the bird stand out from its background. Get tips on painting feathers, moss covered branches, and tropical flowers of the rainforest.

    TAPESTRY WEAVING

    Saturdays, June 12 to June 19 / 1:00PM - 4:00PM

    Learn a number of basic techniques to produce a small tapestry. Various types of weaving and equipment will be demonstrated. Yarn selection, designing, warping, weaving, and finishing of tapestries will be covered. A $25 materials fee is due to the instructor the first day of class – this includes a handmade tapestry loom to keep and all of the yarn for warping and weaving, and other necessary supplies.
