Evan Ziporyn
The Whole Salmon project will be the second commissioned work that Evan Ziporyn will execute for the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. In 1999 the Center was awarded a Meet the Composer grant, enabling the organization to commission an original piece of music from Evan which was then premiered in Sun Valley by the Arden Trio. Ziporyn’s original compositions have been performed by the Kronos Quartet, Bang on A Can, Wu Man, Steven Schick, Sarah Cahill and Orkest de Volharding. His works have been released on two volumes for New World Records. Ziporyn’s music is informed by his twenty-year involvement with Balinese gamelan and his compositions illustrate a comprehensive knowledge of world music as well as classical and folk works.

Ziporyn received his degrees from Yale University and the University of California at Berkeley. He was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship for his study of gamelan music and, in addition to receiving grants from Meet the Composer, Ziporyn has been awarded grant monies from the National Endowment for the Arts, ASCAP, the Rockefeller Multi-Arts Program, the New England Foundation for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Ziporyn is also an accomplished bass clarinetist who has worked with a range of musicians from Paul Simon to Darius Brubeck, Tan Dun, Wu Man, Todd Reynolds, Bob Moses and Tony Scott. He has been associated with the Bang on A Can Festival since its inception in 1987, appearing as composer, soloist and ensemble leader. As a member of the Bang on A Can All-stars, Ziporyn has toured over a dozen countries. Ziporyn is currently a Professor of Music at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
