A Tribe of Artists Costumes and Culture
at Burning Man

For the past 20 years, during the week prior to Labor Day, Nevada's Black Rock Desert is transformed into the celebrated Burning Man art festival and temporary community. The NMA presents an exhibition of 25 life-sized photographs and six mannequins documenting nighttime Burning Man costumes. For the past two years, Geoffrey Nelson has photographed Burning Man attendees in a portable, tent-like studio that he transports and constructs on the playa in order to capture the incredible outfits and extraordinary personalities he encounters there.

This project is funded, in part, by a Jackpot Grant from the Nevada Arts Council.

The NMA will present A Tribe of Artists: Costumes and Culture at Burning Man as a part of the 12th annual Artown festival, July 1-31, 2007, with major funding provided by the City of Reno. The month-long arts festival features more than 350 events, produced by over 100 partnering organizations and individuals in more than 90 locations citywide.
