Nevada Museum of Art Family Programs

Join artists, scholars, critics, historians, writers, and other specialists as they share their in-depth knowledge of the Museum’s current feature exhibitions and timely issues through talks, gallery discussions and tours. Enjoy live music at the Museum’s First Thursday events or take in a film at one of our special screenings. Seniors will enjoy the unique Art Afternoon program, complete with a gallery tour and workshop participation.

First Thursdays

Presented the first Thursday of each month from 5 – 7pm.

Second Saturdays

Second Saturdays are FREE at the Nevada Museum of Art thanks to the Nightingale Family Foundation. Throughout 2011, families, individuals and visitors get the chance to visit the Museum for free and experience the wide range of exhibitions on display, and learn about the educational programs and unique activities on offer throughout the year. As part of the Second Saturdays program, guests have the chance to speak with trained Museum docents about the exhibitions and the Museum, while answering questions about the E.L. Cord Museum School, social activities and educational programs at the Museum, Gallery Tours, special events, and more. Don't miss out on this wonderful opportunity to share the Museum with family and friends!

Art Bites

Select Friday afternoons beginning at 12 pm

These half-hour lunchtime dialogues invite guests to experience an informal and intimate introduction to works in the galleries. Local and regional scholars, writers, and artists share their historic, geographic, and artistic knowledge of the works on exhibit. Afterwards, enjoy lunch in Café Musée or meet up with friends to share your Art Bite experience.

    Brett Van Hoesen on August Sander: Face of Our Time

    Join Art Historian Dr. Brett Van Hoesen for a discussion of August Sander’s Face of Our Time and its social history during the Weimar Republic. Her talk will also explore the legacy of Sander’s work from its controversial reception during the Nazi era to its significant impact on contemporary photography.

    Meet the Artist: Corky Normart on Dalle de Verre Art Glass

    Friday March 2, 2012 / 1:00 pm – 12:45 pm

    Glass artist Corky Normart created the design for the refurbishing of the Great Dome in Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Also an accomplished glass artist, Normart explains the Dalle de Verre method and process of working with stained glass.

Talks

    Premiere Talk: Dr. Martin Eidelberg on Clara Driscoll, the Tiffany Girls, and Art of the Tiffany Era

    Art Historian Dr. Martin Eidelberg is one of the foremost scholars of Tiffany art glass and lamp designs, and has conducted extensive and important scholarship on the role of women in Louis Comfort Tiffany’s studio. Please join the Museum for what promises to be a fascinating look into the life, art and history of Louis Comfort Tiffany and the art glass crafted in his studio.

    AIGA Reno/Tahoe Presents Debbie Millman

    Thursday March 8, 2012 / 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

    In collaboration with the Reno/Tahoe Chapter of AIGA, the professional association for design, the Museum is pleased to present Debbie Millman, a writer, educator, artist and host of the internet radio talk show, Design Matters. Millman is the President Emeritus of the AIGA, author of several books on design, and contributing editor to Print Magazine and Fast Company, in addition to serving as President of Design for Sterling Brands, an international branding firm. Millman will speak about the importance of brand design and design thinking. Tickets are $10 / $8 Museum and AIGA Members. Students and AIGA Student Members will be admitted to the lecture free of charge, but must present a valid student identification at Admissions.

    Black Rock Design Institute Presents Mark Cavagnero | Mark Cavagnero Associates Architecture

    Thursday March 15, 2012 / 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

    Mark Cavagnero’s architecture has earned wide accolades, most recently the 2012 Firm Award from the California Council of the American Institute of Architecture. Among his recent projects is the redesign of the Oakland Museum of California and the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. Learn about the wide range of architecture for which Cavagnero’s firm is responsible. Networking and social hour with beer provided by Silver Peak Brewery at 5 pm. Talk starts at 6 pm.

Films

Enjoy a selection of films chosen to highlight a current exhibition or program at the Museum, occasionally accompanied by a visiting director or producer. Doors open 30 minutes prior to each film screening. Seats are filled on a first come, first served basis and seating is available for guests with special needs.



Guided Tours

Thursdays / 6 pm (except First Thursdays) and Saturdays and Sundays / 1 pm

Guided tours are free with admission and limited to a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations are not required. Spanish language tours by reservation at 775.329.3333 ex. 253.

Art Afternoon: Workshop and Social for Seniors

Presented the second Friday of each month from 1 – 3pm.

Meet up with friends and make art! This ongoing program invites seniors (ages 60+) to tour the Museum’s galleries and participate in a studio workshop. Each month, different artworks are discussed before guests explore various materials in a studio setting. Pre-registration is required. A studio background is not necessary.



Black Rock Design Institute

Since 2003, the Museum has partnered with the Black Rock Design Institute to provide architectural education opportunities in the region. Lectures by practicing designers working in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning are offered throughout the year.

    Black Rock Design Institute Presents Urbanized, a Film by Gary Hustwit

    Thursday February 16, 2012 / 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

    Urbanized is a feature-length documentary about the design of cities, which looks at the issues and strategies behind urban design and features some of the world’s foremost architects, planners, policymakers, builders, and thinkers. The challenges of balancing housing, mobility, public space, civic engagement, economic development, and environmental policy are fast becoming universal concerns, as they are in Reno. Please join the Black Rock Design Institute for this special screening and conversation about urbanization in Reno. Networking and social hour with beer provided by Silver Peak Brewery at 5 pm. E. L. Cord Museum School

The E.L. Cord Museum School offers tuition-based art classes for students of all ages on a quarterly basis. Current offerings include classes in painting, life drawing, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, photography, design courses, and book arts.
