Instructors

For almost its entire 80-year history, the Nevada Museum of Art has provided significant arts education programming for the public, school-aged youth, teachers, and artists in northern Nevada. Providing rich cultural programming for the community and region has been a central focus of the Museum’s educational mission, and the Museum seeks to further this important foundation of work.

  • Armando Serrano

    Armando Serrano is a full-time automotive artist and teaches airbrush and pin striping workshops. He shows his work at expositions across the country. Armando has pin striped and airbrushed cars, motorcycles, helmets, and other objects and accessories.

  • Ashley Follmer

    Ashley Follmer’s paintings explore the impact of new technology on communication specifically the influence of mediated devices on the changing digital landscape. Ashley’s work combines oil and acrylic paint to explore the changing environment and ways in which people communicate. Ashley Follmer received her BFA in painting in 2015 from the University of Nevada, Reno.

  • Candace Garlock

    Candace Garlock has a MFA from Boise State University and a BFA from University of Nevada, Reno.  Candace is a co-founder of the Northern Nevada Printmakers’ Conspiracy whose work has been exhibited and is in collections nationally and internationally. She was awarded the distinguished Nevada Arts Council 2009 Artist Fellowship, a Sierra Arts 2008 Artist Grant, and received an honorable mention from the quarterly magazine, Printmaking Today.

  • Carol Pallesen

    Carol Pallesen has a BA in Art from the University of Nevada, Reno. She has taught book arts and calligraphy for more than 30 years. Her studio, the Silent Hand Scriptorium, is her working space for her commissions and artist books. Having taught at 21 international calligraphy conferences and workshops — teaching is Carol’s greatest pleasure. Carol has shown her work at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. and the Berchtold Villa Gallery in Salzburg, Austria.

  • Carroll Charlet

    Carroll Charlet is a native Nevadan whose watercolor landscapes are inspired by the Sierra Nevada and the Great Basin. Her work has shown in galleries throughout the Reno area. She taught through the Washoe County School District and remains a certified teacher. Carroll has instructed art and drama through the Nevada Museum and the University of Nevada Kid’s U, combining her loves of teaching and art. Her background includes watercolor, ceramics and performance arts.

  • Casey Sibley

    Casey Sibley is an artist, architect, and surface pattern designer living in Reno. She owns the online shop, Casey D. Sibley Art + Design, and specializes in hand drawn art, surface pattern design and handmade home goods and accessories in a happy modern style. Casey uses social media daily to grow her audience and spread the word about her work. When she is not creating new designs for CDS A+D, Casey works as a freelance architect and loves to spend time with her little family (the husband + their two adorable muts) cooking, riding bikes, and exploring the Biggest Little City.  Follow her creative process on Instagram and Facebook @caseydsibley.

  • Daniel Helzer

    Daniel Helzer is a graduate of the Colorado Institute of Art and Fresno State University. He has worked as a graphic designer and illustrator for ad agencies and marketing firms. He also has worked as a concept artist for the video game industry developing characters and environments. Currently, his fulltime job is with International Gaming Technology where he enjoys creating artwork for video slot machines. Apart from work, he pursues his interest in traditional landscape and figurative painting.

  • David McCamant

    David McCamant has worked as an illustrator, art director, animator and creative director. His artwork was featured in Art Business News and can be found in private collections in the US and Europe. He teaches oil painting, plein air, and drawing and is currently writing an instruction book on his methods.

  • Jeff Ross

    Jeff Ross studied photography at Art Center College of Design and is a full-time commercial and editorial photographer. Jeff has done work for GE Energy, Harrah’s Hotels and Casinos, and the University of Nevada, Reno.

     

  • Jerry Stinson

    Jerry Stinson teaches life drawing, one of the most popular courses at the Museum School. Jerry has years of experience in the commercial arts as a graphic designer, art director, production manager, and as a supervisor in marketing services. Jerry continues to pursue a personal life-long study of drawing the human figure.

  • Jessica Weems

    Jessica Weems is an encaustic painter and founder of Seek Your Course. Jess has taught encaustic workshops in New Hampshire, Oregon, California, Spain, Idaho and Massachusetts. Her paintings have been shown in many locations including Boston, New York City, Miami, San Antonio, and Belalcazar, Spain.

  • Kaleigh Surber

    Kaleigh Surber was born and raised in Nevada where she has returned to live after many years in the Sierra Nevada Foothills of California. She is an artist, teacher, personal counselor, lifelong meditator, and spiritual seeker. Kaleigh primarily in watercolor, pastel, ink, and acrylic.  She is currently exploring the ancient art of mandala creation and fusing it with the science of optics to create a new expression. This art has lead her into offering workshops in radiant/mandala creation and journaling as a path to healing, spiritual growth, and living a more genuine and satisfying life. In addition to fine art paintings, Kaleigh has illustrated over twenty-five books for both children and adults and creates advertising illustrations and graphic designs.

  • Karen Vetter

    Karen Vetter is the artist/owner of Dreams to Reality Pottery. She has been working in pottery since 1998 having spent a lengthy career in the health industry. She exhibits her work regularly in the Truckee Meadows area and enjoys exploring the function of pottery and a variety of techniques.

  • Katherine Case

    Katherine Case received her Bachelors in Art and Creative Writing from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and an MFA in Creative Writing with a Book Arts emphasis from Mills College in Oakland. Katherine has taught book arts and letterpress at the Academy of Art University and at the San Francisco Center for the Book, where she worked as Studio Manager and Volunteer Coordinator for nearly a decade. Katherine now owns and operates Meridian Press in Reno, Nevada, where she publishes poetry chapbooks, broadsides, stationery and limited-edition linoleum-cut prints.

  • Katie Packham

    Katie Packham is an artist and designer and the owner Copper Cat Studio in Reno, NV.

  • Katty Ryan Hoover

    Katty Ryan Hoover was born in Corbin, Kentucky.  She received her BA in the College Scholars program at University of Tennessee and an MFA in photography at San Francisco Art Institute. She has also studied at University of Notre Dame and Semester at Sea through University of Virginia. Her work has been shown at Tampa Museum of Art, Marin Museum of Contemporary Art, James Madison University, and Michael Rosenthal Contemporary Art in San Francisco. Currently, Hoover is Full-Time Faculty and Curriculum Coordinator at Academy of Art University. She lives and works in Reno, Nevada.

  • Lisa Kornze

    Lisa Kornze received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Nevada, Reno. She shows her unique, modern, and hand-crafted jewelry and accessories throughout Northern Nevada.

  • Lisa Kurt

    Lisa Kurt received her BFA in design and illustration from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and an MS in Library and Information Science from Simmons College. Lisa is a fine artist and illustrator works primarily with acrylics and mixed media on canvas or wood panels. Her work focuses on themes surrounding childhood, stories, myths, memory, and dreams. Kurt has shown regionally and nationally and she has created illustrations for a variety of clients.

  • Martha Voyevidka

    Martha Voyevidka graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art and Kent State University, where she taught while completing her MA. She did postgraduate studies at the Angewandte Kunst Akademie in Vienna, Austria where her work was included in its Centennial Exhibition. She has exhibited her art in Europe and the United States, including the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Ukrainian Institute of America.

     

  • M.D. Welch

    M.D. Welch is a professional photographer and video director/producer with almost 20 years of experience in print, video, graphic and multimedia design. He has taught all the major Adobe applications, photography and video techniques for the University of Nevada, Reno, TMCC, Shooting the West, and the Nevada Museum of Art. He knowledge, passion and energy applied to the subjects he teaches has been the hallmark of his teaching career

  • Merry Mathers

    Merry Mathers is a long time docent at the Nevada Museum of Art and is a substitute teacher in WCSD. Merry is passionate about youth education and regularly teaches the Kid’s Corner series of classes.

  • Reena Spansail

    Reena Spansail received her BFA from the University of Nevada, Reno. Reena Spansail is a life-long resident of the Great Basin. She works primarily in paint, but dabbles in mixed media and ceramics as well. Her work has been shown in Northern Nevada and California. She also exhibited work over the course of her study in Viterbo, Italy. Reena is working towards her Master’s of Education at UNR.

  • Rex Norman

    Rex Norman is an alumni of the Laguna College of Art and Design, Laguna Beach CA. He works as freelance artist, Illustrator, cartoonist and designer and is active in local art events including Artown and NadaDada Motel. His work includes fine art painting, illustration for nearly a dozen books and several hundred magazines. Rex works as an editorial cartoonist for regional newspapers and occasional work in arts consulting. A growing part of his work includes custom costume design, sculptural costumes, theatrical props and mask making. Rex is the proprietor of “Kostoom Arts”, an online arts service.

  • Stephen Jacobs

    Stephen Jacobs studied meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (of Beatles fame) in Europe in the early 80’s as part of a one year meditation instructor program. He has been teaching various styles of meditation ever since, both privately and in group settings. In addition, he contracts with Renown’s Wellness Program, providing stress management educational services to their business clients. He is retired from his corporate role as a Human Resources Consultant, where he assisted dozens of large companies with their need to better utilize their people.
