GREAT BASIN DRUM MAKING

NOTE: Class meets on Saturday and Sunday, February 9 & 10. Explore the historic art form of drum making from the tradition of the Great Basin Indians including Washoe, Western Shoshone, Northern Pauite and Southern Paiute tribes in this two-day workshop with native Nevadan Washoe/Paiutes, Ben and John Rupert. Using materials found regionally in the Great Basin participants will learn about the heritage of our region while exploring Native techniques. Students will construct a drum frame from poplar wood, stretch an animal hide and create drum sticks from choke cherry and deer hide. All supplies are included.
