Felted Animals and Ornaments
This class is a perfect introduction to the world of fiber. Needle felting is the art of sculpting wool with a specially designed, barbed needle. Stabbing the wool repeatedly creates a firm, textile object. Needle-felting is an ideal craft in that it is easy to learn, requires minimal supplies and can be completed anywhere!

Each student will create two hand-painted ornaments using combinations of dots, lines, dashes and curves. All materials included with registration.

Holiday Cards: Wood Type Printing on the Press
Letterpress print your holiday cards using antique wood and metal type on Katherine’s Vandercook letterpress. During this fun day at Katherine’s studio, Meridian Press, you will learn the basics of letterpress printing: setting type, locking it up in the press, mixing ink and completing an edition of up to 25 two-color greeting cards. Envelopes will also be included.
Please bring an apron and some ideas for holiday cards. We will also look at at plenty of samples for ideas during class.

Hand-carved Blocks with Watercolor: Winter Botanicals
Hand-colored linocut prints combine the dramatic presence of a linocut with the versatility and vibrant hues of watercolor painting. During the first session of class students will learn will the basics of carving and printing a linocut print by hand. Students will carve into traditional battleship gray linoleum as well as the newer Gomuban carving substrate. An oil-based relief printing ink will be used to create the perfect resist for session two, when watercolor and colored pencil techniques will be utilized to brighten up the black and white prints. Students will leave with a set of varied and vibrantly-colored prints.

Please bring ideas for one or two 5×7 linocut prints that will be carved the first session and hand-colored on session two. Black and white photocopied or laser printed images can be transferred onto the linoleum blocks.

Fiber Arts: Natural Dyes of the High Desert
Inspired by the artwork and lifestyle of Georgia O’Keeffe this class explores the color palette of the high desert through the intersection of plants and natural dyes. Working with Brooke Walshaw of Terrior Herbals, students will learn about regional dye plants and how to ethically harvest them. After harvesting the plants, Sarah Lillegard will take students through the natural dye process for silk, linen and wool textiles. By the end of the two-day workshop, students will have a dyed fabric swatches and a primer to working with natural dyes of the Great Basin. Class includes a guided walk through the Living Modern, Georgia O’Keeffe show.
Saturday and Sunday, September 14 – 15 (*September 14 includes an on-site visit to a nearby farm to harvest plant material.)
