The U.S. Flag in Art History – From Celebration to Protest

Flags, like maps, have played a significant role in art for centuries. As a symbol of national identity, celebration, and dissent, the United States flag has inspired generations of modern and contemporary artists. This talk led by Dr. Brett M. Van Hoesen, Associate Professor and Area Head of Art History at the University of Nevada, Reno, examines the flag’s rich visual history and how it plays a central role in Broad Stripes Bright Stars.

Dr. Brett M. Van Hoesen  focuses on Modern and Contemporary art and is currently teaching a seminar on Art World Heists and Other Scandals. In 2019, she received Nevada Humanities’ Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities Award.
