Book Arts: Six Books – One Day (New Structures!)

This class features new non-adhesive book structures so returning students will find new challenges and new students will enjoy learning from start-to finish. Create a miniature book with pockets, a folded “Guest Book” and a flag book, as well as variations on the Asian stab binding and Katherine Case’s tricky two signature sewn chapbook. These fun projects are a great way to become acquainted with the tools and materials of bookbinding, or to further hone and develop your bookbinding skills.

Introduction to Boxmaking: Handmade Box with a Hinged Lid
Thursdays, April 16 – 30 / 5:30 – 8:30 pm
Make this handmade box for your most treasured mementos. Over the three sessions of class, students will be introduced to every aspect of hand boxmaking, including cutting and preparation of bookcloth, decorative paper and board; gluing and assembly; and techniques for scaling this structure and others to perfectly enclose a particular book or keepsake. Students will also be able to personalize their boxes.

The Collagraph Book: Techniques in Printmaking and Bookmaking
Tuesdays, April 14 – May 12 / 6 – 9 pm
This class will combine the art of collagraph printmaking and bookmaking. Students will learn how to make their own collagraph plates, learn intaglio printmaking techniques, and learn to bind their own hand-made journal using the collagraph plates and prints. Students will also learn to bind their book and sew edges using a Coptic stitch technique.
Supply List:
- 4 sheets Rives BFK lightweight paper
- Xacto knife
- 12” ruler old toothbrushes for inking
- 3 tubes of colors (your favorite) Charbonnel Etching Inks
- Small bottle of Elmers glue
- Small bottle of PVA (polyvinyl acetate) glue
- Copies of images or computer printouts, magazine images or other paper art used for collage
- Scraps of lace, yarn, textured papers, cheese cloth, stickers
- Book Binder needle
- 4-ply waxed linen thread (color your choice)

Book Arts: Foundational Calligraphy
Wednesdays, March 4 – 25 / 6 – 9 pm
This beautiful, clear, and simple style of calligraphic writing is based on a circular “o.” The analysis of these lovely rounded shapes is a great place for students to begin a calligraphy education or to improve and refine skills for those who have previously studied lettering. Students will artfully letter minuscule and majuscule forms with pen and ink on paper to illustrate words.

Required Supplies: Notebook (optional), 3mm Brause nib, nib holder, Higgins Eternal Ink, ink dishes (small to hold ink, larger to hold small dish), paper (Strathmore 300 Series Sketch 9×12″ tapebound), rag, apron, baby wipes. Book Arts: Collage Adventure
Saturday, January 24 / 10:30 am – 4:30 pm
Great collage combines elements of both structure and free association. Using Katherine’s legendary paper collection and a collaging technique guaranteed to produce fabulous compositions, we will create an edition of collaborative handmade books. In this fun class, you’ll learn ways to both “banish your inner editor” releasing creative play, and then to reign it in, creating a balanced composition.

Book Arts: Cards to Dye For
Class Meets: Wednesday August 13 and Thursday August 14
Experiment with dyes and papers to create wonderful cards personalized cards in this two-day workshop. Emploring a sense of freedom and discovery students will embrace the fluid nature of colored inks to create one-of-a-kind mixed-media cards. Students will explore basic paper handling techniques and will learn to prepare and dye their cards. Dyes, papers, cards and envelopes are included with course registration.

Book Arts: Non-Adhesive Bookbinding
An excellent introduction to the tools, techniques and resources of bookbinding, we will create three different non-adhesive book structures: an accordion book, a single signature chapbook and a book from a single sheet of paper. After this class you’ll have the tools and know-how to begin making journals, artists’ books, chapbooks and more.
