Radiant Mandalas: Meditative Drawing and Journaling

Wednesday, February 18 / 10 am – 2 pm

Students will explore the origins of the mandala (radiant) and the significance of these designs to various cultures. Experience the joy of learning the construction techniques that allow the inner self to manifest in a physical design filled with color and intricacy. Students will explore techniques to still their minds and bodies in order to relax and allow mandalas to flow onto paper and to then delve deeper in exploring journaling techniques. All necessary materials will be provided, but, if you have a journal or your own pens and colored pencils that you enjoy using, please bring them.

Using Botanicals in a Sill Life Painting

Sundays, February 15 – March 1 / 11 am – 3 pm

Learn to use botanical specimens in creating a complete still life in watercolor. Both botanical painting and still life composition including foreground and background techniques will be taught and demonstrated. No experience necessary.

Required Supplies:

  • Basic watercolor paint set (Reeves or Richardson is fine) 
  • No 6 and No 8 watercolor brushes (or small and medium pointed watercolor brushes)
  • Ten well round plastic pallet (or white dinner plate)
  • Mechanical pencil and kneaded eraser 
  • Roll of paper towels
  • 2 each 9”x12” pieces of arches watercolor paper*
  • *Paper can be purchased from instructor during class for $2 per sheet

Learn to Draw Portraits

Tuesdays, November 18 to December 9 / 6 – 9 pm

Have fun while improving your drawing skills! This class will focus on using classical techniques to create a stunning portrait. In this class students will be introduced to gesture drawing, structure of the human face, two-value block-in, rhythm, lines and much more. For the final two classes, we will have a live model pose to further develop your skills.

  • Vine Charcoal
  • Various types of charcoal sticks
  • Charcoal pencils
  • Kneaded eraser 
  • Newsprint/charcoal paper

Fun with Color for the Watercolorist

Thursdays, September 25 – October 16 / 1:30 – 5 pm

Explore the excitement of selecting and mixing colors in watercolor for optimal results. Students will enjoy demonstrations as well as plenty of opportunity for experimentation. Some familiarity with the medium is recommended.

Ages: 15 and Up / Some experience with Watercolors

Required Supplies:

  • Watercolor paper – either many sheets 11 X 15 or a large tablet 
  • 2 large round brushes 
  • Water container 
  • Paper towels 
  • Bring all tubes of watercolor paint that you have 
  • Add a few new watercolors to your palette and different brands.

Kids’ Corner: Painting & Drawing Basics

Class Meets: Tuesday July 29 to Thursday July 31

Using a selection of drawing and painting materials, kids ages 7-12 will enjoy exploring basic techniques and principles and elements of design while creating personalized artworks.

Explorations in Pen & Ink

Class Meets: Saturdays, July 26 & August 2, 2014

Work from favorite photographs to create realistic interpretive drawing using just pen and ink. Instructor will introduce students to the various techniques in pen and ink including stippling, cross hatching and washes.

Required Supplies: Smooth drawing paper, precise rolling ball pens, quill pens and inks, brushes for ink washes, pencil (for preliminary sketching), personal or collected photos for reference.
