In this 2 day workshop students will create their own  marbled designs on 3 different silk scarves. During the first day we will discuss and practice patterns and color combinations that work well for marbled silk scarves. Students will have ample practice time to experiment and develop their vision in the standard marbling tray before moving on to the large scarf tray. Day two we will prepare two 20” x 72” trays for the silk. Students will take turns on these trays to execute each scarf with the assistance of the instructor.

Students will learn how to use iPads programs to create their own digital designs with the goal of making a simple hand stitched book cover out of leather. The finished book cover will display their original design. This class is great for those with leather or scrapbooking interest who want to learn how to create their own vector designs to use with laser or paper cutters (Cricut, ect.).

Inspired by the artwork and lifestyle of Georgia O’Keeffe this class explores the color palette of the high desert through the intersection of plants and natural dyes. Working with Brooke Walshaw of Terrior Herbals, students will learn about regional dye plants and how to ethically harvest them. After harvesting the plants, Sarah Lillegard will take students through the natural dye process for silk, linen and wool textiles. By the end of the two-day workshop, students will have a dyed fabric swatches and a primer to working with natural dyes of the Great Basin. Class includes a guided walk through the Living Modern, Georgia O’Keeffe show.

In conjunction with the exhibit, Living Modern, this class will explore the ways in which Georgia O’Keeffe self-fashioned herself using the language of Modernism. During this three day workshop, students will create wearable, abstract designs that focus around simplicity, line and geometry using a variety of recycled materials and fabrics. The final pieces will be activated with a live performance, where students will walk through the Living Modern exhibit wearing their creations. The course will end with an O’Keeffe inspired photo shoot, were the students will pose for black and white portraits photographed by the instructor. Each student will receive an 8″x10″ print of their portrait after the workshop has ended.

Returning tapestry students will expand on their knowledge of weaving in this second-level tapestry weaving class. Students will work towards the completion of a small landscape tapestry to be displayed in completion as a wall hanging.  Registration includes the pattern, yarns and reference materials.

Students learn the basics of weaving on Day 1. On Day 2 & 3, students will work towards the completion of a sampler and a small wall hanging (4″ x 10″). Students will be provided with a pattern and yarn to use. The instructor will also have looms available for student use during the class. Students enrolled in this class are encouraged to also enroll in “Tapestry Weaving- Landscape Wall Hanging” scheduled for August 6 – 8.

This class will explore the origins of yarn. Taking raw wool freshly sheared from local sheep, students will wash it, card it, spin it into yarn and dye it. Students will finish the class with a custom skein of yarn that they have made from start to finish.

Needle felting is the art of sculpting wool with a specially designed, barbed needle.  Stabbing the wool repeatedly creates a firm, textile object.  Needle-felting is an ideal craft in that it is easy to learn, requires minimal supplies and can be completed anywhere!
