From Sheep to Yarn

This class will explore the origins of yarn. Taking raw wool freshly sheared from local sheep, students will wash it, card it, spin it into yarn and dye it. Students will finish the class with a custom skein of yarn that they have made from start to finish. All materials to be supplied by instructor.

Needle Felted Animals and Ornaments

This class is a perfect introduction to the world of ?ber! Needle felting is the art of sculpting wool with a specially designed, barbed needle. Stabbing the wool repeatedly creates a ?rm, textile object. Needle-felting is an ideal craft in that it is easy to learn, requires minimal supplies and can be completed anywhere!

Textile Marbling on Scarves

In this two-day workshop students will create their own marbled designs on three different silk scarves.

During the first day we will discuss and practice patterns and color combinations that work well for marbled silk scarves. Students will have ample practice time to experiment and develop their vision in the standard marbling tray before moving on to the large scarf tray.

On day two we will prepare two 20” x 72” trays to create silk scarves. Students will take turns on these trays to execute each scarf with the assistance of the instructor.

Introduction to Western Paper Marbling

This popular marbling workshop will introduce students marbling techniques on fabric that can be used for covering books and boxes. Students will begin the day by working on basic marbling skills. With the instructor’s guidance, they will work on new patterns with an eye for nuance. The main focus will be on marbling fabric to create book cloth, and techniques for other textile uses will also be discussed. At the end of the day, the instructor will demonstrate how to prepare pieces of marbled cloth for use in bookbinding. Students will leave with their own stack of 15 marbled fabric pieces. All materials provided with registration.

– All students will be requested to wear a mask for the duration of their visit inside the Museum school. Mask will be provided upon request.

– Please exercise social distancing when in close proximity to other students and staff. Class sizes and seating arrangements have been changed to allow for 6 feet of social distance.

– Please note, snacks and drinks will no longer be distributed during class. Students are encouraged to bring their own personal water bottle and snack if needed to class.

Book Arts: Handmade Journal
