Building and Stretching Your Own Canvases

A Painting is a Picture That is Also A Built Object: Painted Surfaces, Supports, and Still Lives. In this three day workshop, we will be discussing the physical construction of painting supports, including how to build and stretch canvasses to make your own paintings. Considering the object of a painting much like a sculpture, we can become more aware of the formal qualities of the painting support–such as scale, size ratios, choice of fabric or panel, surface quality, and more. Finally, we will have some fun experimenting as we make some paintings on our new supports. No prior experience necessary, and all skill-levels welcome.

Finding Your Inner Georgia O’Keeffe

This class, based on O’Keeffe’s dictum to “fill a space in a beautiful way,” opens up the making of art with a view toward O’Keeffe’s own perspective and practices. Get started or get guidance from visiting artist Anna Koster, who worked with O’Keeffe in 1976 and has gone on to have a long career as an artist. Students will begin with an exercise that O’Keeffe often assigned and another from the teacher who encouraged her to express herself, which ultimately led to her fame. This class focuses on color, composition, and personal expression and is ideal for beginners, amateurs, and those looking for a fresh approach for their work
