Through thoughtful observations, students will learn how to create striking lighting and intriguing compositions. This class is perfect for beginner students looking to learn oil painting in an approachable way, or intermediate to advanced artists looking to refine their skills.

From design to fine art, cinematography to textiles, color is essential. Working in acrylic or gouache, students will gain an understanding of color in this 2-day painting intensive course. Students will learn the basics of color theory and color mixing to create unique, intentional choices that guide the viewer to a specific mood. Students will be able to apply practical theory in an intuitive and free manner to their work through a series of abstract studies. By the end of the class, students will walk away with a personal library of color palettes that they can use for broader personal usage.

In this plein air intensive, students will learn a way to interpret the complex world of foliage in their own art, and be able to freely sketch nature from life. Although seemingly random, the way that nature grows is balanced and harmonious. Students will observe the beauty of Idlewild intently and translate nature into their investigative sketches. On the second day of the intensive, students will make painting studies that deepen their understanding of what they are learning and observing. Please dress appropriate for the class as you will be outside in the elements and bring plenty of water. 

You will meet Dasha in Idlewild Park at the California building.

This class is for students who are new to watercolor or have worked on their own and are looking to improve their watercolor skills with step-by-step instructions. The instructor will discuss various watercolor supplies and suggest appropriate starting materials. Students will learn to recognize various levels of paper wetness and how to use them to achieve the desired watercolor effects. Under the guidance of the instructor, students will also practice various techniques such as basic color mixing, brush strokes, various types of washes and more. Supplies will be provided.

Join us to explore how to paint vibrant and expressive sunsets using watercolor. Focusing on a primarily wet-in-wet approach, students will learn essential techniques such as creating smooth gradated washes, lifting pigment to form clouds, displacing color for dynamic effects, reserving whites, and painting sunsets alla prima. You’ll also practice adding landscape elements like palm trees, Joshua trees, and other natural forms.

For best results, 100% cotton watercolor paper is highly recommended when working with wet-in-wet techniques.
