Watercolor Foundations: Watercolor for Beginners

This class is for students who are new to watercolor or have worked on their own and are looking to improve their watercolor skills with step-by-step instructions. The instructor will discuss various watercolor supplies and suggest appropriate starting materials. Students will learn to recognize various levels of paper wetness and how to use them to achieve the desired watercolor effects. Under the guidance of the instructor, students will also practice various techniques such as basic color mixing, brush strokes, various types of washes and more.

  • 100% Cotton watercolor paper, 140 lb, cold press (various brands are available: Fluid, Arches, Fabriano Artistico, Stonehenge Aqua Coldpress, Bee paper, etc.)
  • Strathmore Watercolor Pad, 400 Series, 140 lb, cold press, 9”x12” (It has a brown cover. Do NOT get the pad with the yellow cover!)

Long Pose Figure in Any Medium

In this class students will work from a live, nude model, and a single pose for the entire 6 hour session. Long pose figure drawing gives students the time to develop a drawing beyond a gesture, and focus on more accurate measurements, as well as taking a deeper dive into value. Feel free to bring in any drawing or painting mediums for this class. There will be materials in the classroom for students to use. This class runs like an open studio, and the instructor will be present to give as much or as little instruction as each student requests.  

*Note: There will be a 1 hour lunch break from 1 – 2 pm.

Improve your life painting skills and explore a variety of paint media while working freely from a nude model in this popular figure painting class. The instructor will be present to coordinate class and offer instruction upon request and is a perfect class for beginner to advanced artists. Both male and female models will be placed in short and long poses.

Painting Intensive: Landscapes from Photographs in Oil or Acrylic

Working in oil or acrylic paint, students will explore value divisions in landscapes and the basics of brush sketching and massing. With these skills students will learn how to relate color to value and will gain a better understanding of identifying spatial cues in a landscape. Using foundational skills students can then explore under-painting, glazing and dry-brushing techniques.

In this beginner class, add the sculptural element of depth to your piece by exploring simple ways you can shape your canvas using a Dremel tool. Under the guidance of the course instructor, you will learn to use simple techniques to create negative space and texture, adding relief(s) to your painting.  You will learn—and experience—the myriad potentials for your artwork when you begin to add sculptural elements to your two-dimensional compositions. No previous woodworking experience required and all supplies are provided.
