Portrait Painting in Oil or Acrylics

Tuesdays, October 23 – November 20 / 6 – 9 pm

Students will be introduced to portrait painting techniques while exploring the unique qualities of oil or acrylic paint. Student will be work on composition, facial structure and anatomy while exploring painting techniques in the studio. Student will work on painting techniques in the first two classes. The final three classes will have utilize a live model for reference.

Painting clinics are designed to offer specific instruction on a variety of techniques and painting challenges. This series is ideal for Painting: Open Studio students looking for additional instruction and help with specific topics. Students may use acrylic or oil paint. Dry media is also welcome.

Winter in the Sierra: Watercolor Workshop

Saturday, December 1 / 10 am – 4 pm

Students will enjoy learning techniques to painting snow and reflections while creating a soft watercolor snow scene.  Students will explore the properties of watercolor while experimenting with impressionistic watercolor effects.  All levels are welcome, but this class is ideal for the beginner. Watercolor for Beginners: Lavender Fields

Tuesday – Thursday, September 25 – 27 / 1:30 – 4:30 pm

This three-session course will focus on the importance of value and depth in landscape paintings. The subject of lavender fields will first be explored in a monochromatic painting, focusing on value as well as wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry watercolor techniques. In the following sessions students will explore color mixing and will apply the value lessons learned from monochromatic study to full color spectrum paintings.

  • Watercolor paper: 140 lb, cold press (professional grade such as Arches or Daler-Rowney Langton Prestige suggested)
  • Brushes: 1/2 or 1 flat brush, round brushes # 4 and 10 (or any smaller and larger round brush with a point)
  • Palette that includes Cerulean Blue, Permanent Rose, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, Sap Green, Burned Sienna, Indigo

Landscapes in Oil: Dramatic Skies

Beginning and advanced students will enjoy this five-day technique-based class focused on creating dramatic landscapes with special attention paid to the sky. Working from photo reference, students will explore the use of sensitive and effective strokes to manipulate paint with a brush and pallet knife. Students will explore texture and depth while creating dramatic landscape paintings.

Quick Studies in Oil

Monday – Friday, October 29 – November 2 / 9 am – noon

Students will enjoy learning how to paint small color sketches or studies (“pochades”) using oils. This class will focus on how to capture light in the landscape quickly while working with oil paint. Hands-on instruction will take students from basic setup to finish a quick study in oil. This course is designed to introduce you to plein air landscape painting techniques in a classroom setting. Students should have some experience painting with oils.

Getting Started with Oils: An Introduction to Painting Techniques and Tools

Monday – Friday, October 8 – 12 / 9 am – 12 pm

This course is intended to introduce students to traditional  painting techniques using oils. Students will gain a good foundational working knowledge of how to setup subjects, blocking, brushwork, mixing color and the use of Neo Megilp medium. The “ala prima” (in one sitting) also called “direct painting” technique will be taught in making still life paintings. Each lesson begins with the concepts to be covered, demonstration of the techniques, hands on experience and ends with suggested homework to be critiqued at the next lesson.

Hand Painted Ornaments

Inspired by her Czechoslovakian heritage, instructor Iva Neveux will introduce student to basic painting techniques to create beautiful holiday ornaments. Each student will create two hand-painted ornaments using combinations of dots, lines, dashes and curves.  All materials included with registration.
