Getting Started with Oils: An Introduction to Painting Techniques and Tools

Monday – Friday, October 8 – 12 / 9 am – 12 pm

This course is intended to introduce students to traditional  painting techniques using oils. Students will gain a good foundational working knowledge of how to setup subjects, blocking, brushwork, mixing color and the use of Neo Megilp medium. The “ala prima” (in one sitting) also called “direct painting” technique will be taught in making still life paintings. Each lesson begins with the concepts to be covered, demonstration of the techniques, hands on experience and ends with suggested homework to be critiqued at the next lesson.

SUPPORTS 
Inexpensive canvas boards or panels. Students who wish to do the homework will need to double the number of panels. 
1 – 11″ x 14” (OPTIONAL – add one more for homework*)
2 – 8″ x 10″ (OPTIONAL – add two more for homework*)
3 – 6″ x 8″ (OPTIONAL – add three more for homework*)
 
OIL PAINT – 1 – 37 ml tube of oil paint in the following colors:   
 
WHITE: Titanium White (2 tubes are suggested)   
YELLOW:Cadmium Lemon, Windsor Yellow, Hansa Yellow, Medium or Cadmium Yellow Light  
RED:Cadmium Red Hue, Cadmium Red Medium or Cadmium Berium Red (not deep) 
BLUE: French Ultramarine Blue or Ultramarine Blue
BLACK: Ivory Black
MAGENTA (OPTIONAL*): Permanent Rose or Quinacridone Red 
CYAN (OPTIONAL*):  Thalo Blue or Phthalo Blue
 
You may bring whatever paint you have as long as they are the correct hues or colors. An inexpensive option is Windsor Newton Winton student colors. ‘Artist Grade’ paints will produce better results in color mixing.
 
PAINTING MEDIUM: Neo MeGilp Medium 2oz or Larger
 
BRUSHES – Recommend Connoisseur brand #2106 pure synthetic oil paint brushes or any artist quality manufacturer VERY IMPORTANT. 1 each #6 and #8 Long-Handled Filberts
 
PALETTE – Gray Matters, palette paper or equivalent
 
CLEANING JAR – Silicoil cleaning jar or other small jar with lid
 
CLEANING SOLUTION – 1 – 8oz bottle of artist grade Walnut oil
 
BRUSH CLEANER – 2.5 OZ small cake of The Masters Brush Cleaner
 
PAPER TOWELS – 1 roll of BLUE shop paper towels (OPTIONAL – add one more for homework*)
 
WET PANEL CARRIER – inexpensive cookie sheet covered in aluminum foil or aluminum roasting pan for wet painting transport

Hand Painted Ornaments

Inspired by her Czechoslovakian heritage, instructor Iva Neveux will introduce student to basic painting techniques to create beautiful holiday ornaments. Each student will create two hand-painted ornaments using combinations of dots, lines, dashes and curves.  All materials included with registration.

Capture the beauty of autumn leaves. Using the techniques of botanical illustration learn to create pictures and cards in watercolor, pencil and ink. This class is open to all levels.

Color Studies in Watercolor

Saturday, October 27 / 10 am – 2 pm

Translucence is at the heart of watercolor painting. Learn to chart and mix your colors to keep the beautiful luminosity of the medium. This class includes color charting both wet and dry, mixing triads for unusual color, and learning to combine warm and cool hues. An excellent class for both the beginner and advanced student.

Supply List:

  • Your personal watercolor pallet. If you are a beginner please contact Iva Neveux for pallet suggestions. 
  • 2 sheets 11 x 15 140 lb cold pressed watercolor paper (Paper can be purchased from the instructor during class for $2 a sheet as we will use 2 or 3 sheets). 
  • Roll of paper towels 
  • Drawing pencil 
  • Kneaded eraser 
  • 2 Plastic water containers 
  • #6 or #8 round brush (Silver/Black Velvet brush recommended – available at Nevada Fine Arts)

Painting: Open Studio

Sundays, October 14 – November 4 / 1 – 4 pm

Students will enjoy developing their painting techniques and skills in this observational open studio class.  Weekly subject matter will rotate between nude and clothed models and still-lifes. Each class will begin with brief instruction followed by an open studio format painting class. Students may use acrylic or oil paint. Dry media is also welcome.

Ages: Adult (18+) / All levels

  • Color recommendations are as follows though all mediums are welcome for this open studio class:

Botanical Illustration: Winter Gourds

Learn the techniques of botanical illustration to capture the bounty of winter gourds in watercolor.  Students with watercolor experience and those new to watercolor are welcome.

Thursday, December 6

– Basic watercolor set that includes yellows, sap green and reds (Beginner’s Reeves or Richardson Set is fine)
– Small round 10-well pallet
– No 6 or No 8 pointed/round watercolor brush
– Graphite or mechanical pencil
– Rubber eraser
– 2 plastic water containers
– Roll of paper towels
– Tablet of cold press 140 lb watercolor paper (2 sheets will be used in class). Students may opt to purchase single sheets of watercolor paper from the instructor for $2/sheet

Nightscape in Watercolor

This one-day workshop will present techniques in watercolor to express the beauty of sunsets, starry nights and early dawns.  Both impressionistic and realistic approaches will be explored.
