This intermediate level open studio class is designed for returning students and experienced students. Students should have a personal work in progress to work towards completing in this fun and social series. Each class will begin with a short lesson addressing a challenge or technique followed by open studio time to continue work on personal projects. Instructor will be on hand to assist with challenges, offer critique, instruction, and encouragement. 

Thursdays, January 17 – February 7

Supply list: Please bring any supplies you own for your specific project. A recommended basic supply list is as follows:

• Watercolors: Cobalt Blue, Phthalo Blue, Lemon Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Magenta, Sap Green, New Gamboge, Yellow Ochre. (Cotman or Van Gogh is fine; Windsor Newton is excellent)
• Your personal watercolor pallet
• 2 HB Pencils
• Watercolor Brushes: #6 & #10 Round (Silver/Black brand is recommended and available at Nevada Fine Arts)
• Pad of Arches 140# cold press watercolor paper
• Roll of paper towels
• 2 Plastic water containers

Learn the techniques of botanical illustration to capture the bounty of winter gourds in watercolor.  Students with watercolor experience and those new to watercolor are welcome.

Working in oil paint, students will explore value divisions while focusing on the figure in the landscape. Drawing inspiration from the photographs of Anne Brigman (on view in the Museum through January 2019), students will focus on composition and the ways in which the figure compliments the environment. Students will explore the basics of brush sketching and massing, identifying spatial cues in a landscape and will explore under-painting, glazing and dry-brushing techniques. Students will work from photo-reference as well as a live model in the final sessions.

Students will enjoy developing their painting techniques and skills in this observational open studio class.  Weekly subject matter will rotate between nude and clothed models and still-lifes. Each class will begin with brief instruction followed by an open studio format painting class. Students may use acrylic or oil paint. Dry media is also welcome.

Students will be introduced to portrait painting techniques while exploring the unique qualities of oil or acrylic paint. Student will be work on composition, facial structure and anatomy while exploring painting techniques in the studio. Student will work on painting techniques in the first two classes. The final three classes will have utilize a live model for reference.

Tuesday – Thursday, September 25 – 27 / 1:30 – 4:30 pm

This three-session course will focus on the importance of value and depth in landscape paintings. The subject of lavender fields will first be explored in a monochromatic painting, focusing on value as well as wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry watercolor techniques. In the following sessions students will explore color mixing and will apply the value lessons learned from monochromatic study to full color spectrum paintings.
