Oil Painting Techniques: Back to Basics
Sundays, March 1 – 29 / 1 – 4 pm
Student new to oil or looking for a quick refresher will enjoy this introductory level course designed to teach basic oil painting techniques. Students will learn the properties of oil paint, application techniques, and color theory while recreating simple still life installations. Each class will focus on different painting techniques which will include a review of brushes and their function, blending techniques, color use and the grayscale and an introduction to textures.
Supply List:
- Paint: Ivory or Mars Black, Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, Pthalo Blue, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Umber, Alizerin Crimson (37 mL or 1.25 oz or larger tubes)
- Synthetic Brushes (Flat or Filbert)

Open Studio Sessions
Sundays, April 19 – May 10 / 1 – 4 pm
Students will enjoy this open studio format class. Instructor will emphasize painting techniques, though all mediums are welcome. Each four-week session will include a rotation of costumed models, nude models and still-life for reference. Instructor will be available to provide individual assistance, critiques and demonstrations upon request.
Supply List: Any type of painting and/or drawing mediums are welcome.

Art High: Exploring the Grayscale
Tuesdays, December 2 – December 16 / 3:30 – 5:30 pm
Teens ages 13 – 18 learn to add dimension to their artwork by learning how to make and use the grayscale and valuescale in both graphite and acrylic paint. All materials are included with registration.

Landscapes in Oil
Thursdays, January 29 – March 5 / 9 am – noon
This course teaches the basics of painting landscapes with traditional oils. Students will gain a good foundational working knowledge of equipment, supports, brush selection, brushwork, mixing color and mediums. The direct painting techniques of landscape painting will be taught without the use of solvents. Each lesson has demonstrations of the techniques with hands on experience.

Inexpensive canvas boards or panels.
Students who wish to do the homework will need to double the number of panels.
- 1 – 11″ x 14” (OPTIONAL – add one more for homework*)

OIL PAINT
- 1 – 37 ml tube of oil paint in the following colors:
- WHITE Titanium White (2 tubes are suggested)
- YELLOW Cadmium Lemon, Windsor Yellow, Hansa Yellow Medium or Cadmium Yellow Light
- RED Cadmium Red Hue, Cadmium Red Medium or Cadmium Berium Red (not deep)
- BLUE French Ultramarine Blue or Ultramarine Blue
- BLACK Ivory Black
- MAGENTA (OPTIONAL*) Permanent Rose or Quinacridone Red
- CYAN (OPTIONAL*) Thalo Blue or Phthalo Blue
- You may bring whatever paint you have as long as they are the correct hues or colors. I recommend inexpensive Windsor Newton Winton student colors.
PAINTING MEDIUM
- Neo MeGilp Medium 2oz or Larger
BRUSHES
- Recommend Connoisseur brand #2106 pure synthetic oil paint brushes or any artist quality manufacturer
- VERY IMPORTANT 1 each #6 and #8 Long-Handled Filberts
PALETTE
- Gray Matters, palette paper or equivalent
CLEANING JAR
- Silicoil cleaning jar or other small jar with lid
CLEANING SOLUTION
- 1 – 8oz bottle of artist grade Walnut oil
BRUSH CLEANER
- 2.5 OZ small cake of The Masters Brush Cleaner
PAPER TOWELS
- 1 roll of BLUE shop paper towels (OPTIONAL – add one more for homework*)
WET PANEL CARRIER
- Inexpensive cookie sheet covered in aluminum foil or aluminum roasting pan for wet painting transport

Watercolor for Beginners
Wednesdays, January 28 – February 18 / 1 – 4 pm
Learn the skills used in creating beautiful paintings using translucent watercolors. Beginners will learn the basics of pallet set up, color mixing, composition and a wide range of watercolor techniques including washes, glazing, dry brush work and “special effects.”

- Colors: Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine, Cadmium Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Sap Green, New Gamboge, Yellow Ochre
- Plastic studio pallet with at least 10 paint wells
- 2 HB Pencils
- Watercolor Brushes: #6 or #7 Round and #10 or #12 Round and Wash (flat) Brush at least 1 inch wide
- Pad of Arches 140# cold press watercolor paper
- Roll of paper towels
- 2 Plastic water containers
- Additional watercolor supplies (paints, brushes, etc) are welcome but not necessary

Holiday Cards in Watercolor
Sunday, December 7 / 1 – 4 pm
Using ink and watercolor, learn how to make your own cards for the holidays. Create several original cards ready for mailing and learn how to reproduce your favorites. No art experience necessary! Bring a friend, enjoy some cookies and go home with some fun holiday cards. All materials included.

Using Botanicals in a Sill Life Painting
Sundays, February 15 – March 1 / 11 am – 3 pm
Learn to use botanical specimens in creating a complete still life in watercolor. Both botanical painting and still life composition including foreground and background techniques will be taught and demonstrated. No experience necessary.

- Basic watercolor paint set (Reeves or Richardson is fine)
- No 6 and No 8 watercolor brushes (or small and medium pointed watercolor brushes)
- Ten well round plastic pallet (or white dinner plate)

- 2 each 9”x12” pieces of arches watercolor paper*
- *Paper can be purchased from instructor during class for $2 per sheet
