Nevada’s educators are invited to hear from artist Guillermo Bert. Bert works at the forefront of cultural and technological innovation and his artwork gives voice to people who have been marginalized, silenced, and overlooked. His artworks draw metaphorical relationships between the journeys of migrants, harsh and inhospitable desert landscapes, and the commodification and objectification of American values. Join Guillermo Bert, Colin Robertson, Charles N. Mathewson Senior Vice President of Education and Research, and Megan Bellister, Curator of Learning and Engagement, as they explore these complex topics and how to use Bert’s artwork in your classroom.

Virtual Educator Evening: Ciel Bergman: Sea Full of Clouds

While teaching art at the University of California, Santa Barbara during the 1980s, artist Ciel Bergman discovered increasing amounts of plastic trash washing up on the local beaches. Bergman conceived the idea of recycling waste plastic to create a sustainable road paving material to reduce our dependence on oil. Join Curator of Learning and Engagement, Megan Bellister, and explore how an artist addressed a global challenge with creativity and innovation. Learn to challenge and inspire fellow educators and students to be active problem-solvers.

Virtual Educator Evening: Charlotte Skinner: Paintings as Historical and Environmental Documents

Charlotte Skinner was an artist and educator who lived in the Eastern Sierra of California from 1905 to 1933. Guided by her appreciation for the natural landscape of the Eastern Sierra, Skinner created spirited works that portray the Owens Valley at a time of great economic, social, and political change in the region. Much of this disruption was a result of the construction of the Los Angeles Aqueduct that diverted water from the Owens River to Los Angeles. Join Curator of Learning and Engagement, Megan Bellister, and analyze the environmental characteristics of places and explore how art preserves aspects of social-cultural and ecological life by looking at the work alongside Nevada Academic Content Social Studies Standards and Next Generation Science Standards.

Ben Aleck, is a lifelong artist, educator, and enrolled member of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe (Kooyooe Tukadu/cui-ui fish eaters). Born in Reno and raised on the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony (RSIC), Aleck’s paintings, illustrations, and prints give visual form to Indigenous stories. Join Curator of Learning and Engagement, Megan Bellister, as she explores how to use portraits by Aleck to deepen interdisciplinary connections between art and history.

Back to School Night for Educators 2023

Nevada’s PreK-12 educators are invited to a special in-person back-to-school night. Enjoy access to the Museum’s exhibitions, a DJ, small bites and a bar. Participate in hands-on activities and a raffle.

Education providers will be present to share teaching resources, including Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows, Challenge Island Reno-Sparks, Desert Research Institute, Discovery Education, The Discovery, Doodles Academy, Envirolution, Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center, The Holland Project, Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful, Lahontan Audubon Society, Nevada Math, Nevada Museum of Art, Nevada State Museum, Reno Phil, Sierra Arts Foundation, Sierra Nevada Journeys, University of Nevada Reno Art Department, and Washoe Co. Library System.

Sunday Music Brunch

Sunday Music Brunch at the Café is the perfect precursor to an afternoon exploring our galleries. Chef Colin Smith has updated the menu to include an eclectic array of options from traditional breakfast fare to lunch options–both of which pair nicely with juice, coffee, champagne or a mimosa. Enjoy live music by Colin Ross from 11:30 to 2:30. Doors open at 10:30 am and service continues until 2:30 pm. Reservations are required for parties of five or more, but encouraged for all as space is limited. Museum members receive 10% savings as a benefit of membership.
