Virtual Educator Evenings
Artist Lordy Rodriguez leads October’s program live from his studio in the San Francisco Bay Area. Born in 1976 in the Philippines, Rodriguez crafts his drawings in the tradition of early cartographers. Unlike his predecessors, however, Rodriguez emphasizes repetitive stylized patterns and intense colors rather than specific sites, territories, or boundary lines. This approach encourages viewers to reconsider the history of mapmaking, as well as our tendency to accept maps as wholly truthful and accurate representations of the land.
Rodriguez’s work is included in the Museum’s permanent collections and is currently on view in In the Flow. With his guidance, we will discuss mapmaking and identity and explore ways we might interpret his works to inspire classroom practices.
