Life Drawing: Open Studio
Improve your life drawing skills and explore a variety of media while working freely from a nude model in this popular open studio class. The instructor will be present to coordinate class and offer instruction upon request. Both male and female models will be posed and drawn.
Thursdays, October 7 – 28
1 – 4 pm

Ages: Adult (18+) | All Levels
Supply list: Show a confirmation receipt at Nevada Fine Arts for a 10% discount.
The following are suggested basic supplies – all media are welcome, so please bring whatever supplies you need for whichever media you are using.
- Drawing board – 20”x 26” or larger (light-weight masonite works best)
- Newsprint pad – 18”x 24” – rough surface recommended
- Bull dog clamps or similar to attach pad to board
- Medium and Support Items:
- Vine charcoal, thin and fat pieces
- Choice of conte crayon, 6B graphite pencil or sticks, china marker, compressed charcoal, carbon pencils, or any suitable medium for drawing on newsprint
- Large kneaded eraser
- Pink pearl eraser
- Portable pencil sharpener or utility knife (best for soft/medium pencils)
- Clean small rags
- Sandpaper pad for sharpening drawing mediums
- Stumps for blending (optional)
Fall Break Camp: Fun with Clay
Kids ages 7 – 12 will have fun exploring the tactile nature of clay. Instruction will encompass basic hand building, throwing on the wheel, and sculpture. In this 5 day camp, students will learn about the basics of pottery, glazing and the transformation of their pieces from the heat of kiln. This will be a fun and educational class. All works will be fired in the Museums’ kiln. Snack and materials are included.

Clay: Earthworks
Create decorative and functional pottery in this six-week class designed for the beginner as well as those who have taken intermediate pottery classes in the past. Students will learn how to work with clay in both hand building, and wheel-throwing techniques. Finishing methods such as decorating, stamping, painting, and staining will be introduced as well as the discussion and practice of firing and glazing of clay works. Stoneware clay will be used and cone 6 and cone 06 glazes will be available. All firings will be done by the museum in an electric kiln. All materials are provided.

In this workshop, I will share with you some really great tips, tricks and techniques I have learned along the way, either through my own experimentation or from some pretty amazing artists including Carl Purcell, Karen Frey, the late, great, Charles Reid, and John Salminen. You don’t need to be an expert for this class; I’ll show you how a lot of special effects are accomplished, and how to get those really great darks that make your paintings exceptional! No middle-value blah paintings here!

1 or 2 artist-quality watercolors and brushes, size 8 and 6 rounds are great; a 2” or 3” Hake brush and an inexpensive rigger for masking.
- Watercolor paper – 1 full 22×30” sheet of good quality watercolor paper (Arches or Fabriano), cold press
- 1 piece 16×20” foam core or other stiff board to mount paper to
- Masking tape
- Masking fluid
- Small container of salt
- Small bar of soap (hotel sized type)
- Paper towels
- Generously sized container for water
- 1 sheet graphite transfer paper
- Ball-point pen for tracing image (suggest blue or red to see where you’ve traced)
- Spray bottle for water (small Windex bottle works great)
- Blow dryer

Color Theory and Mixing Pigments in Watercolor
Watercolors are admired for their unique quality – translucence. Learn more about the pigments on your palette and experiment with mixing your own colors to keep the beautiful luminosity of the medium. This class explores color mixing, tonal values, color theory, painting with triads and learning how to avoid muddy mixes. Students will also learn about origins of pigments

- Paper: 2 sheets 11 x 15 inches, 140 lb cold pressed watercolor paper (paper can be purchased from the instructor during class for $2 a sheet; we will use 2 or 3 sheets)
