Virtual Summer Art Camp: Color and Pattern

This weekly summer art series introduces students to a diverse group of contemporary America artists represented in the World Stage exhibition. Each week we will focus on three artists and will explore themes found in the exhibition and techniques inspired by the artists. This week’s theme is Color and Pattern and will focus on the work of artists Mark Bradford, Willie Cole and Mickalene Thomas.

This virtual art camp will be held online through Zoom. Camp will meet Tuesday – Thursday from 10 am – noon. An art kit is included with your registration and can be picked up at the Museum in on a Monday, July 13 from 10 am – 5 pm. Please email claire.munoz@nevadaart.org if an alternate pick up is needed. If you are outside the region and need a kit mailed to you (please provide 10 days notice for mail time). While the camp will be held virtually, your registration will include admission to the Museum for you and your family for the week of your chosen camp and we encourage you to visit! In addition to the provided art kit, please have the following supplies available each day: pencil, scissors, glue stick, ruler.

Georgia O’Keeffe Inspired Large Scale Watercolor Flowers (Virtual)

Learn about composition in painting and develop your watercolor skills while being inspired by the artwork of Georgia O’Keeffe. Students will begin by going looking at the art of O’Keeffe’s floral paintings, specifically the 1939 paining Hibiscus with Plumeria currently on view at the Museum. This class is ideal for beginners, or those wishing to refresh their skills.

   -Several sheets of 140 lb cold pressed watercolor paper (recommended professional grade such as Arches, Daler Rowney Langton Prestige, Kilimanjaro)

   -Drawing pencil (mechanical pencil works the best)
   -Kneaded eraser
   -2 Plastic water containers
   -At least 3 brushes: Rounds # 4 & 8, Rigger brush (recommended Silver/Black Velvet brushes)

Fused Glass Earring and Pendant Workshop

Learn to create beautiful fused glass earrings and pendants. Each person can choose to make: Option #1 (1) set of earrings and (1) pendant, Option #2 (3) sets of earrings, or option #3 (2) pendants. Findings or backings are all attached later, by the teacher, to the artwork to ensure all jewelry can be worn. Students will learn to cut flat glass, use frits, stringers, dichroic sparkly glass, and even pebbles to create beautiful hand-made jewelry. All work is created in molds that are later fired. All materials come with the class.

Learn to create beautiful fused glass coasters or suncatchers. Students will learn basic cutting, scoring and breaking methods with flat fusible glass. We will experiment with rods, frits, stringers, dichroic sparkly glass and more! Create one large or two small small sun-catchers in any design. No heat involved and no experience necessary!

We will experiment with rods, frits, stringers, dichroic sparkly glass and more! Create one large or two small small sun-catchers in any design. No heat involved and no experience necessary!

Stylized Pet Portraits in Acrylic

Using bold colors, modern patterns and engaging compositions, students will use acrylic paint combined with colored pencil to create inspired portraits of their animals. In this two-day intensive, student will work with basic drawing skills, contour lines, loose gridding and blocking techniques to layout the portraits on wooden panels. Final pieces will be completed in acrylic. Each student can expect to complete a 18” x 24” wooden panel or two in this workshop. All materials are provided with registration.  Students are asked to bring their own photos for reference.

Stylized Flowers in Acrylic

Using bold colors, modern patterns and engaging compositions, students will use acrylic paint combined with colored pencil to create stylized flower paintings. In this two-day intensive, student will work with basic drawing skills, contouring lines, loose gridding and blocking techniques to layout the designs on wooden panels. Final pieces will be completed in acrylic. Each student can expect to complete two 18” x 24” wooden panels in this workshop.
All materials are provided with registration.  Students may work from a selection of provided photos or are welcome to bring their own photos for reference.

Intro to Digital Illustration

Learn the basics of the Procreate app while using an iPad Pro. The class will be focused on what each tool does and how to utilize them to create finished digital illustrations, typography and short form animations.
