Drawing Fundamentals and Figure Drawing

Students will be taught traditional drawing techniques while focusing on the structure and form of the body. Classroom instruction and drawing exercises without a live model will happen in the first several weeks of class and will culminate in classroom instruction and drawing from a live nude model. Individual instruction and critique are fundamental to this course. Beginning students will learn the fundamentals while returning students will be able to improve on and refine their skill.

Young Artist Series: Character Development

The Young Artist Series is for kids ages 11 – 15*

Want to learn some of the secrets behind your favorite characters design and even create your own? This class will teach you some basic techniques used by character designers to help make your characters stand out and through their design. If you love comic’s, video games, or just love characters this is the class for you. This is an open studio course designed to teach students how to ask questions and design your own character! From charismatic hero’s to dastardly villains and all the weirdness in-between come join artist C.J. Norris as he introduces you to the wonderful world of character design.

From Sheep to Yarn

This class will explore the origins of yarn. Taking raw wool freshly sheared from local sheep, students will wash it, card it, spin it into yarn and dye it. Students will finish the class with a custom skein of yarn that they have made from start to finish.

Making Paintbrushes with Natural Materials

Learn how to create your own paintbrushes using a variety of natural materials. Crafting your own paintbrushes allows you to create a wide range of textures and qualities with your brushstrokes. Students will create the handle from clay or bamboo shoots and experiment with textures created by an assortment of natural bristles.

Please bring a variety of potential bristles from home.

Desert Sunsets in Watercolor

This class will focus on painting the vibrant colors of southwest sunsets in watercolor. Instruction will be given in creating deeply saturated colors by layering multiple washes. A combination of wet and dry brush painting will be used to create the stark contrasts of desert landscapes. Some watercolor experience is recommended.

Bugs and Botanicals in Ink and Watercolor

Insects have been used in botanical illustrations since the 1800’s. They are also fun to paint on their own. Using watercolor and ink, learn to capture the beautiful iridescent colors of the insect kingdom. This class is appropriate for all levels.

Stylized Insects and Flowers in Acrylic

Using bold colors, modern patterns and engaging compositions, students will use acrylic paint combined with colored pencil to create stylized insect and flower paintings. In this two-day intensive, student will work with basic drawing skills, contouring lines, loose gridding and blocking techniques to layout the portraits on wooden panels. Final pieces will be completed in acrylic. Each student can expect to complete two 18” x 24” wooden panels in this workshop.
All materials are provided with registration.  Students may work from a selection of provided photos or are welcome to bring their own photos for reference.

Photography: Creative Lighting

Creative Lighting takes the skills learned in the Lighting 101 class and expands them into new creative territories. Students will learn how to work with mixed lighting, using color correction gels, as well as adding color to their lights with cine/party gels.

Grids, diffusion and advanced multi light setups will be covered in detail, so not matter if you are shooting portraits, product or still life images, you work will shine with these newly learned skills.

This course will not only include demo work, but also significant hands on work with a wide range of gear and different subjects.

Required Gear: Students need to bring their cameras, lenses, charged batteries and manuals to class. If students already own lighting equipment, they can bring it to class for the hands-on portion of class.
