Book Arts: Book Repairs and Restoration

In this class, you’ll gain a foundational understanding of how books from 100–150 years ago were manufactured, and how time affects their structure. From that knowledge, we’ll explore the most common issues that arise with aging books and the best practices for addressing them. You’ll learn how to carefully remove damaged pages, repair and reassemble them, and reattach covers to the book block. Like a trip to the “emergency room” for books, this workshop will show you how to breathe new life into treasured volumes while preserving as much of their original character and appearance as possible.

Book Arts: Articulated Binding – An Indestructible Cover

An indestructible cover, inspired by Italy’s 1970’s solution to the Yellow Pages in public phone booths, this 360-degree flexible binding offers many advantages because it bends and does not break! It offers visual and tactile delight, employing strips of articulated boards and marbled fabric. In this workshop, instructor Pietro Accardi will instruct students in the art of this rare binding technique. Students will create a large and small articulated blank journal that can beautifully withstand the ravages of time. All materials provided.

Introduction to Silver Smithing: Rings

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn the fundamentals of silversmithing as you create your own custom ring. Guided step-by-step, you’ll measure and cut metal, then hammer it to fit your exact finger size. You’ll also construct and solder a bezel setting, carefully securing a stone of your choice to your ring. To finish, you’ll add your personal touch with a brushed, polished, or patinated surface—resulting in a one-of-a-kind piece of wearable art.
