Students enjoy this course designed to teach basic drawing techniques with a specific emphasis on drawing shape and form. Students will improve their observational drawing skills by first working on rendering basic shapes, working later towards creating compositions on the page and realistically drawing more complex objects, forms and textures while referencing staged still life displays. This class is designed to provide a strong introductory foundation for beginning drawing students and a refresher for more advanced students.

Artist, Ann Johnston, will present a fast-paced lecture/demonstration of both low-water immersion dyeing and painting and printing with Procion MX dyes, introducing the unlimited potential of creating color and pattern on cotton, linen, rayon, and silk. The dyes are versatile, economical and safe to use. Their advantage over paint is that they are light and wash fast–without changing the hand of the fabric. Johnston will show how various tools are used and how changing the consistency of the dyes creates different effects. The goal of the seminar is to offer students a chance to see possibilities for their own work and encourage them to be able to make their own marks and colors on their textile projects. Handouts will provide the basic recipes for future use.  For added fun, volunteers may be recruited during the demonstrations to sample techniques.  For further reference see Ann’s book, Color By Design: Paint and Print with Dye and her DVD Color by Accident: Exploring Low-Water Immersion Dyeing. This popular marbling workshop will introduce students marbling techniques on fabric that can be used for covering books and boxes. Students will begin the day by working on basic marbling skills. With the instructor’s guidance, they will work on new patterns with an eye for nuance. The main focus will be on marbling fabric to create book cloth, and techniques for other textile uses will also be discussed. At the end of the day, the instructor will demonstrate how to prepare pieces of marbled cloth for use in bookbinding. Students will leave with their own stack of 15 marbled fabric pieces. All materials provided with registration.

Create decorative and functional pottery in this six-week class designed for the beginner as well as those who have taken intermediate pottery classes in the past.  Students will learn how to work with clay in both hand building, and wheel-throwing techniques. Finishing methods such as decorating, stamping, painting, and staining will be introduced as well as the discussion and practice of firing and glazing of clay works. Stoneware clay will be used and cone 6 and cone 06 glazes will be available.  All firings will be done by the museum in an electric kiln. All materials are provided.

This course is a 3-day intensive study covering the use of color with emphasis on how seeing relates to color choices. Students will gain a good foundational working knowledge of how to mix and use color as it relates to making artwork. The class will be exposed to many color theories, which will be put into practice. Each lesson begins with the concepts to be covered, demonstration of the techniques, hands on experience.
