Girls’ Night Out: Mixed Media Madness
Wednesday, September 27 / 6 – 8:30
Playful, simple mixed media techniques will be demonstrated and a wide range of supplies and tools will be available. Type on the typewriter, collage vintage papers, stitch the edges, and create beautiful mixed media artworks. Bring old friends, meet new ones and have a great night over a glass (or two!) of wine and a fun project designed for all skill levels.

Supply List: Any mixed media supplies you already own and love (stamps, inks, paints, pens, etc). Any collage supplies you want to work with. (Optional; plenty will be supplied)
Portrait Painting in Oil or Acrylics
Tuesdays, October 10 – November 7* / 6 – 9 pm
NOTE: Class does not meet on 10/31
Students will be introduced to portrait painting techniques in the first two class sessions (without a model). The following two classes will have brief instruction at the beginning of class followed by an open studio format painting class working from a live model. Students may use acrylic or oil paint.

Introduction to Textile Marbling – Private Course for Reno Fiber Guild

This popular marbling workshop will introduce students marbling techniques on fabric that can be used for covering books and boxes. Students will begin the day by working on basic marbling skills. With the instructor’s guidance, they will work on new patterns with an eye for nuance. The main focus will be on marbling fabric to create book cloth, and techniques for other textile uses will also be discussed. At the end of the day, the instructor will demonstrate how to prepare pieces of marbled cloth for use in bookbinding. Students will leave with their own stack of 15 marbled fabric pieces. All materials provided with registration.

Studio Photography: The Still Life – A Weekend Intensive at the Studio of Jeff Ross Photography
Friday, November 10 (6 – 8 pm)
Saturday and Sunday, November 11 and 12 (9 am – 3 pm)
Explore still-life photography in the professional studio of Jeff Ross Photography. Students will use continuous light and classical composition styles from painters and illustrators while photographing still life subject matter. This class is ideal for individuals interested in producing images for sales and advertising and for those interested in commercial photography. Subjects will progress through shooting simple shapes in black and white and then move on move to shooting more complex objects and surfaces in color. Students will enjoy class critiques and an energetic studio setting.
Instructor: Jeff Ross
Ages: Adult (15+) / Intermediate Level Students (must be comfortable with camera settings and functions).
Supply list:
- Digital slr camera with manual control for shutter speed and aperture. Please bring camera manual as a resource if you are not familiar with setting white balance and ISO.
- Tripod will be very helpful.
- Hand held light meter will also be helpful but not required.
- Laptop computer (or computer) with image editing and capture software for your camera, also helpful but not required.
- Flash drive to transport images
NOTE: Classes are taught off site at Jeff Ross’ professional studio at 892 Maestro Drive, in Reno.
Gingerbread Workshop (6 pm)

Decorate a festive gingerbread house to take home and enjoy for the holidays. Kids will have fun frosting their houses and embellishing them with an assortment of candies to create that perfect winter scene. Dress for a mess!

Drawing: Open Studio – The Costumed Figure
Tuesdays, December 5 – 19 / 1 – 4 pm
Using media of choice, students will explore costume, texture, and style in this open studio class. Drawing from a live model, students will explore textural costumes, lighting and form in this dynamic class for all skill levels. The instructor will be present to coordinate class and offer instruction upon request. Both male and female costumed models will be posed and drawn.

The following are suggested basic supplies – all media are welcome, so please bring whatever supplies you need for whichever media you are using.
Drawing board
– 20”x 26” or larger (light-weight masonite works best)
– Newsprint pad – 18”x 24” – rough surface recommended
– Bull dog clamps or similar to attach pad to board
Medium and Support Items
– Vine charcoal, thin and fat pieces
– Choice of conte crayon, 6B graphite pencil or sticks, china marker, compressed charcoal, carbon pencils, or any suitable medium for drawing on newsprint
– Large kneaded eraser
– Pink pearl eraser
– Portable pencil sharpener or utility knife (best for soft/medium pencils)
– Clean small rags
– Sandpaper pad for sharpening drawing mediums
– Stumps for blending (optional)
Miniature Pine Needle Baskets
Sunday, November 5 / 10 am – 2 pm
Create a miniature pine needle basket using natural materials. Learn from the basket making tradition of Audrey Frank’s native Nevadan Washoe/Paiute culture. Explore weaving methods by combining pine needles, sinew and raffia in this one-day workshop.

Required Supplies: Small sewing scissors, small hand towel/dishtowel. Instructor to provide raffia, pine needles, thread.
