Girls’ Night Out: Mixed Media Madness

Thursday, September 21 / 6 – 8:30

Playful, simple mixed media techniques will be demonstrated and a wide range of supplies and tools will be available. Type on the typewriter, collage vintage papers, stitch the edges, and create beautiful mixed media artworks. Bring old friends, meet new ones and have a great night over a glass (or two!) of wine and a fun project designed for all skill levels.

Supply List: Any mixed media supplies you already own and love (stamps, inks, paints, pens, etc). Any collage supplies you want to work with. (Optional; plenty will be supplied)

Linocuts: Holiday Cards

Friday, December 1 / 10:30 am – 4:30 pm

Learn to carve simple, beautiful patterns or images in linoleum and print them using Japanese hand printing techniques. The holiday-inspired images we’ll be working with in this class lend themselves especially well to this versatile printmaking process. Found images can be transformed into vibrantly layered compositions using Katherine’s easy transfer and carving techniques. Everyone will leave with a small edition of hand-printed holiday cards. You’ll learn all about the tools, techniques and resources you need to be begin linoleum carving and printing at home.

Supply list: 
Pencil, ruler, photocopies of patterns and holiday images you would like to use (some will be provided to choose from by instructor). NOTE: Please bring a sack lunch.

Día de Los Muertos: Sugar Skull Workshop (5:30 pm)

Friday, October 21 / 4 – 5 pm

Learn about the Mexican tradition of Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and create and decorate colorful sugar skulls!  This centuries old tradition honors and celebrates the souls of those who have passed. This class will provide demonstration of the steps of making a sugar skull from scratch. Each student will receive two sugar skulls to decorate and take home.

Drawing Techniques: Back to Basics

Tuesdays, September 12 – October 17 / 1 – 4 pm

Students will enjoy this introductory level course designed to teach basic drawing techniques including rendering, figure drawing, and perspective. This class is designed to provide a foundation for drawing, teaching students how to realistically draw objects, environments and people. Each class will focus on different drawing techniques and strategies, beginning with rendering and shading objects in perspective to drawing a live model.

Summer Intensive: Impressionist Painting Techniques in Oil

Monday – Friday, August 14 – 18 / 9 am – noon

Inspired by the American and French Impressionists, students will use oil paint to explore color, light and shadow in this summer intensive. This series will explore brushwork techniques, cropped compositions, color breaking and mixing colors directly on canvas.

SUPPLY LIST:

SUPPORTS: Inexpensive canvas boards or panels. Students who wish to do the homework will need to double the number of panels.

  • 1 – 11″ x 14” (OPTIONAL – add one more for homework*)
  • 2 – 8″ x 10″ (OPTIONAL – add two more for homework*)
  • 3 – 6″ x 8″ (OPTIONAL – add three more for homework*)

OIL PAINT: 1 – 37 ml tube of oil paint in the following colors: 

  • WHITE – Titanium White (2 tubes are suggested)
  • YELLOW – Cadmium Lemon, Windsor Yellow, Hansa Yellow Medium or Cadmium Yellow Light
  • RED – Cadmium Red Hue, Cadmium Red Medium or Cadmium Berium Red (not deep)
  • BLUE – French Ultramarine Blue or Ultramarine Blue 
  • BLACK – Ivory Black
  • MAGENTA – Permanent Rose or Quinacridone Red  
  • CYAN – Thalo Blue or Phthalo Blue 

You may bring whatever paint you have as long as they are the correct hues or colors. I recommend inexpensive Windsor Newton Winton student colors.

PAINTING MEDIUM:Neo MeGilp Medium 2oz or Larger

BRUSHES: Recommend Connoisseur brand #2106 pure synthetic oil paint brushes or any artist quality manufacturer VERY IMPORTANT

  • 1 each #6 and #8 Long-Handled Filberts

PALETTE: Gray Matters, palette paper or equivalent

CLEANING JAR: Silicoil cleaning jar or other small jar with lid

CLEANING SOLUTION: 1 – 8oz bottle of artist grade Walnut oil

BRUSH CLEANER: 2.5 OZ small cake of The Masters Brush Cleaner

PAPER TOWELS: 1 roll of BLUE shop paper towels (OPTIONAL – add one more for homework*)

WET PANEL CARRIER: inexpensive cookie sheet covered in aluminum foil or aluminum roasting pan for wet painting transport

NOTE: Painting techniques will not use any solvent or turpentine, only painting medium.

Art High: Ceramics – Hand Building and Wheel Throwing Techniques

Saturdays, October 14 – November 18 / 9:30 am – noon

Teens ages 13 – 18 will enjoy this six-week series designed to develop hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques while working in clay. Students will be introduced to basic techniques and skills will be encouraged think creatively while working towards their final project(s).

Kids’ Corner: Fun with Clay

Wednesdays, October 11 – November 15 / 3:30 – 5:30 pm

Young artists will enjoy exploring the qualities of clay in this fun after-school series. Students will have the opportunity to hand build and experiment on the pottery wheel. All materials and a snack are included with registration.

Kids ages 7 – 12 will have fun exploring a variety of art mediums in this fun and interactive one-day workshop. Students will get their hands dirty in the classroom early in the morning and then and will practice their drawing skills while exploring the Museum’s galleries.  A mid-morning snack and all materials are included with registration.

*Students need to bring a cold-lunch and bottle of water.
