Mixed Media Encaustics

Sunday, January 31 / 10 am – 4 pm

No medium is more versatile or addictive than encaustic. Hot wax plays nicely with a range of other mediums to provide stunning outcomes. This class will include a brief overview of the basic encaustic skills and then dive deeper into exploring the best ways to marry various mediums with wax. Come and learn how other medium can combine with wax underneath, in the middle of, and on top of encaustic. Students will complete 2-3 small panels.

Any scraping/carving tools you already own (share supply will be provided) 
Any objects to embed, such as bones, rocks, gears, pottery pieces, nails, etc.

Animal Illustrations in Ink and Watercolor

Sunday, April 17 / 10 am – 3 pm

Learn to combine the texturing of ink and the vibrancy of watercolor to create whimsical works of animals and plants.  This class is designed to teach basic approaches to animal illustrations.  No experience necessary.

Watercolor Paint, Paper (140 lb cold press) and Pallet.

NOTE: If you don’t have your own kit you may purchase a kit which will include paper, paint and a pallet for $10 directly from the instructor. Please e-mail carrollcharlet@sbcglobal.net in advance so it can be prepared.

No 8 or No 6 pointed watercolor brush

Radiant Mandalas: Meditative Drawing and Journaling

Wednesday, December 16 / 10 am – 2 pm

Participants will explore the origins of the mandala (radiant) and the significance of these designs in various cultures. They will experience the joy of learning the construction techniques that allow the inner self to manifest in a physical design filled with color and intricacy. Students will learn to still their minds and bodies in order to relax and allow mandalas to flow onto the paper. They will discover through the significance of color and points the inner world they reveal. All necessary materials will be provided but, if you have already have a journal and your own colored pencils and pens that you enjoy using, please bring them.

Summer Intensive: Landscapes in Watercolor

Tuesday, July 12 – Thursday, July 14 / 10 am – 3 pm

Learn the skills used in creating beautiful watercolor landscapes in this three-day summer intensive. Students will use photo reference and will explore the various qualities of watercolor. While this class is open to students of all levels, some watercolor experience is recommended. *Supply list.

Studio Portraits 1-2-3

Wednesdays, January 27 – February 10 / 6 – 9 pm

Learn studio portraiture using just one light, then two lights and then three lights. This course is a hands-on experience using artificial lighting, including continuous light, portable flash, studio strobe and fluorescent to create portraits with depth and drama. Students will work in a professional studio.

Supply List: Digital SLR camera with manual exposure settings for shutter speed and aperture, computer with image editing software such as Photoshop or Lightroom, external drive to transport digital images.

Photography: Speed Lighting

Saturdays, April 9 and 16 / 10 am – 2 pm

This photography class is for students who own, or are planning to own, a Speedlight for their cameras (The small flash that can be attached to the top of the camera). Students will learn how to create better light on and off the camera with this lighting accessory and go from flat ugly lighting, to creating light that can compete with expensive studio lighting. This class is perfect for those just learning about lighting, and professionals who are looking to add the power of Speedlights to their skill set.

Ages: 15 and up / All levels

Required Supplies: A Speedlight is not required for the first day of class, but students will need to bring a Speedlight to class for the second week. Students will also need to bring their DSLR cameras, manuals, additional lenses, charged batteries for both Speedlights and cameras, as well as memory cards.

Suggested Supplies: Students may also want to purchase a light stand(s), umbrella adaptors, and a umbrella for their Speedlights. However, students may want to hold off on purchasing gear until after the first week of classes’ gear overview, so they know what to buy and not to buy. These additional materials would be used during the second week of class, and are not necessary for the first week.

Laptop Lecture: Introduction to Lightroom

Thursdays, March 3 – 17 / 6 – 9 pm

Adobe Lightroom is quickly becoming the go to application for photographers of any experience level, but so many photographers are not using the application to the fullest potential. There are also features of Lightroom that are best left to other applications, and those work arounds will be shown in class. From tethered shooting to advanced Develop module techniques, this class with get new Lightroom users up and running, and advanced users taking advantage of features that will save time, and reduce frustration.

Supply List: 
A laptop is not necessary for this class, but having one will not hurt, as students can work along with the instructor during class. Files for the class will take up 6-8 GB of space, and students should have that amount of space free on their computers if they want to work along with the instructor.

DSLR Camera Basics

This class is designed for beginning to intermediate photographers who have purchased a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera, which is a camera with removable lenses. Course participants will explore the specific features of DSLR cameras, as well as general photographic skills and techniques to make great pictures.

Required Supplies: Students are required to bring have a DSLR camera, as well as their camera’s manual. A fully charged battery and memory card are also necessary for class. Any lenses that they own should also be brought to class.

Creating Image Transfers

Tuesday, January 26 / 6 – 9 pm

Create a variety of image transfers in this class where various methods will be taught. Using black and white as well as color photocopies, create image transfers on to paper, canvas, wood, and more using gel transfer and packing tape transfer methods.

Supply List:

  • black and white toner-based photocopies and color photocopies* (must be toner ink, these cannot be printed on inkjet prints- they will not work) 
  • sketchbook, moleskin journal or other blank journal (any size – accordion books work great for this if you can fine them!)
  • magazines with images you like (fashion, home decor, art are all great for this) 
  • small wood panels, raw canvas or other objects you might want to print on/decorate (wood/canvas/paper all work well). There will be a small selection of objects will be provided to choose from as well.
