Kids’ Corner: Printmaking Techniques
Wednesdays, January 13 – February 10 / 3:30 – 5:30 pm
Young artists will enjoy exploring printmaking techniques in this fun after-school series. Students will create multi-sided stamp blocks, reduction prints and mono prints. All materials and a snack are included with registration.

Color Studies in Watercolor

Translucence is at the heart of watercolor painting. Learn to chart and mix your colors to keep the beautiful luminosity of the medium. This class includes color charting both wet and dry, mixing triads for unusual color, and learning to combine warm and cool hues. An excellent class for both the beginner and advanced student. *Supply List.

Watercolor: Open Studio
Fridays, January 22 – February 12 / 9 am – noon
Beginning and experienced students will enjoy this four-week open studio format watercolor series. Students are invited to bring works in progress or begin new projects in this fun and social series. Each class will begin with a short lesson addressing a challenge or technique followed by open studio time to continue work on personal projects. Instructor will be on hand to assist with challenges, offer critique, instruction and encouragement.
Supply List: Please bring any supplies you own for your specific project. A recommended basic supply list is as follows:
- Watercolors: Cobalt Blue, Phthalo Blue, Lemon Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Magenta, Sap Green, New Gamboge, Yellow Ochre. (Cotman or Van Gogh is fine; Windsor Newton is excellent)
- Your personal watercolor pallet
- 2 HB Pencils
- Watercolor Brushes: #6 & #10 Round (Silver/Black brand is recommended and available at Nevada Fine Arts)
- Pad of Arches 140# cold press watercolor paper
- Roll of paper towels
- 2 Plastic water containers.

Watercolor for Beginners
Thursdays, January 14 – February 11 / 1 – 4 pm
Learn the skills used in creating beautiful paintings using translucent watercolors.Beginners will learn the basics of pallet set up, color mixing and a range of watercolor techniques including washes, dry brush work and “special effects.”
Supply List:
- Watercolors: Cobalt Blue, Phthalo Blue, Lemon Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Magenta, Sap Green, New Gamboge, Yellow Ochre. (Cotman or Van Gogh is fine; Windsor Newton is excellent)
- Plastic studio pallet with at least 10 paint wells
- 2 HB Pencils

- Pad of Arches 140# cold press watercolor paper. (Single pieces can be purchased from the instructor during class for $2 each). We will use approximately four sheets.

Watercolor Sketches of Lake Tahoe
Saturday, January 9 / 10 am – 3 pm
Learn watercolor techniques that capture the beauty of lake, sky and granite that makes Tahoe so unique.This workshop will include a walk-through of the Museum’s exhibition Tahoe: A Visual History.

- Basic watercolor set (paint and brush)

Bookbinding: Six Books – One Day
Saturday, April 16 / 10:30 am – 4:30 pm
This class features new non-adhesive book structures so returning students will find new challenges and new students will enjoy learning from start-to finish. Create a miniature book with pockets, two types of multi-signature sewn books, two variations on the concertina, and an easy folded box that you can adjust in size to protect any document or book. These fun projects are a great way to become acquainted with the tools and materials of bookbinding, or to further hone and develop your bookbinding skills. *Supply List.

Introduction to Boxmaking
Saturday, March 5 / 9 am – 12 pm
and Sunday, March 6 / 9 am -3 pm
Make this handmade box for your most treasured mementos. Over the three sessions of class, students will be introduced to every aspect of hand boxmaking, including cutting and preparation of bookcloth, decorative paper and board; gluing and assembly; and techniques for scaling this structure and others to perfectly enclose a particular book or keepsake. Students will also be able to personalize their boxes.

- A clean cotton rag
- Any decorative paper or collage elements you would like to incorporate into your box

Book Arts: Fundamentals of Collage
Saturday, February 6 / 10 am – 4 pm
Great collage combines elements of both structure and free association. Using Katherine’s legendary paper collection and a collaging technique guaranteed to produce fabulous compositions, we will create an edition of collaborative handmade books. In this fun class, you’ll learn ways to both “banish your inner editor” releasing creative play, and then to reign it in, creating a balanced composition.

Oil Painting Techniques: Back to Basics
Tuesdays, April 5 – May 3 / 6 – 9 pm
Student new to oil or looking for a quick refresher will enjoy this introductory level course designed to teach basic oil painting techniques. Students will learn the properties of oil paint, application techniques, and color theory while recreating simple still life installations. Each class will focus on different painting techniques which will include a review of brushes and their function, blending techniques, color use and the grayscale and an introduction to textures.

Acrylic Painting Techniques: Back to Basics
Tuesdays, February 16 – March 15 / 6 – 9 pm
Students will enjoy this introductory level course designed to teach basic acrylic painting techniques including blending, impasto, and dry brush. Students will paint from still life installations, paint portraits, and create abstract compositions combining various techniques. Each class will approach acrylic paint differently to provide an introduction as to how the medium can be utilized for different styles and subject matter.
