Book Arts: Six Books – One Day (New Structures!)

This class features new non-adhesive book structures so returning students will find new challenges and new students will enjoy learning from start-to finish. Create a miniature book with pockets, a folded “Guest Book” and a flag book, as well as variations on the Asian stab binding and Katherine Case’s tricky two signature sewn chapbook. These fun projects are a great way to become acquainted with the tools and materials of bookbinding, or to further hone and develop your bookbinding skills.
Supply List: Pencil, 18” metal ruler, Xacto knife, bookbinding awl, bone folder, scissors, medium binder clips, doublestick tape

Portrait Painting in Oil or Acrylics
Tuesdays, May 12 – June 16 / 6 – 9 pm
Students will be introduced to portrait painting techniques in the first two class sessions (without a model). The following four classes will have brief instruction at the beginning of class followed by an open studio format painting class working from a live model. Students may use acrylic or oil paint.

Stop Motion Animation Camp
Monday – Friday, July 20 – 24 / 8:30 am – 12 pm
Young campers will explore stop-animation, claymation and “humanimation” in this half-day camp for kids ages 7 – 12. Campers will work though concept development, storyboarding and animation techniques. Short videos will be created on table tops in the Museum School, in the Museum’s galleries and outside the Museum. All campers will need to bring a charged iPad (with the power cord) to class each day. Students must all have downloaded Stop Motion Studio Pro software to create their original animations. Snack and materials are included.

- Students must download “Stop Motion Pro” by cateater llc. There is a free download available, though the paid $5 version is highly recommended.
Ahoy! Mixed Media Pirate Camp
Monday – Friday, July 6 – 10 / 8:30 am – 12 pm
Ahoy Maties! Young pirates will journey the seven seas in this exciting mixed-media camp. Campers will explore painting, drawing, ceramics and printmaking techniques in this pirate themed half-day camp for kids ages 7 – 12. Snack and materials are included.

Printing Techniques: Hand Carved Woodblock
Saturday and Sunday, June 6 and 7 / 10 am – 2 pm
Inspired by the exhibitions “Betsabee Romero: In Transito” students will explore the basics of woodcut prints. Participants will learn about the tools and techniques used in carving woodblocks and will then learn the basic techniques of hand printing them. By the end of the class, participants will have created their own iconic woodcut and print.

Preschool Play in Clay

Toddlers ages 1 – 3 will enjoy playing in clay with their parents as they create Mothers’s Day inspired keepsake treasures while exploring the tactile qualities of clay.

Mosaics 101: Introduction to Mosaics
Saturday and Sunday, April 18 and 19 / 1 – 4 pm
In this two day class, students will learn the basics of mosaics, including techniques, design and grouting. Using various materials, students will be guided through a 10” x 10” mosaic mirror project. All materials provided but students may bring other objects (stones, jewels, beads, etc.) to incorporate into their piece. This class is intended for those unfamiliar or new to mosaics but all skill levels are welcome.

Clay: Earthworks – Special Glaze Session
Wednesday, February 25 / 6 – 9 pm
This session is designed for students who have completed the Jan/Feb session of Clay: Earthworks and would like to have one additional opportunity to complete their glaze work. Students registering should have a selection of their own bisque ware that was created in the January/February session of Clay: Earthworks.

The Artists’ Roundtable: Identifying Yourself as an Artist
Saturday, February 21 / 9 am – noon
Artists, art professionals and art enthusiasts are invited to join a roundtable discussion with like-minded individuals. This professional development session is designed to help artists refine their artist statement, professional bio and resume, work towards developing a “brand” and learn how to shoot and prepare a digital portfolio with the intention of finding more professional opportunities. Surface pattern designer and artist, Casey Sibley of Casey D. Sibley Art + Design, will facilitate a group dialogue featuring special guests Lisa Kurt, painter and illustrator behind Lisa Kurt Art + Illustration, Sarah Stevenson, a photographer and mixed media artist and the creator of the art retreat, Create. Explore. Discover, and Frances Melhop, Director of St. Mary’s Art Center and a photographer with ties to Milan, Italy, Europe, and the South Pacific, creating extraordinary and unique imagery in the fashion and advertising arena.
