Ceramics: Creating with Clay

Intermediate and advanced level students will enjoy developing their hand building and/or wheel throwing projects in this class. The instructor will introduce students to new techniques such as lidded, forms, vases, and image transfer. Students are encouraged to come to class with ideas for their own projects while the instructor will encourage experimentation and assist students as needed.

Introduction to Glass Art: Kiln Forming

Students will explore the amazing world of kiln-formed glass art by utilizing clear and colored flat glass along with various tools and techniques. Students will have the opportunity to create pendants & jewelry, coasters, suncatchers and more! Learn about the process of designing, cutting, melting, and kiln-forming the glass. Additionally, students will learn about the science, history, technology, and culture of this unique medium. All supplies are provided.

Fall Break Camp: Digital Art and Illustration

Kids ages 7– 11 will have fun playing on the Museum’s iPad Pros as they work on story-boarding, character design and animation in this 5 day summer camp. Students will also have an opportunity to explore and sketch using the iPads in the Museum’s galleries while looking for inspiration for their own work. A snack and all materials are included with registration.

Fall Break Camp: Intro to Visual Art

Kids age 7 – 11 will explore a variety of art forms as we dive into the world of visual art. Under the guidance of the instructor, students will learn foundational skills related to drawing, painting, collage and sculpture. Throughout this camp, students will be introduced to contemporary and pop artists known for their work in these mediums. The skills learned in this camp will help students understand the basics for future artistic endeavors. All supplies and a mid-class snack are provided.

Fall Break Camp: Fun with Clay

Kids ages 7 – 11 will have fun exploring the tactile nature of clay.  Instruction will encompass basic hand building, throwing on the wheel, and sculpture.  In this 5 day camp, students will learn about the basics of pottery, glazing and the transformation of their pieces from the heat of kiln. This will be a fun and educational class.  All works will be fired in the Museums’ kiln. Snack and materials are included.

Introduction to Sewing: Mastering the Basics

In this 4 week course students will learn to master the basics of sewing and complete your very own tote bag from a design and fabric of your choosing. If you’re a beginner or someone who needs a refresher, this class is for you! Students will learn basic sewing machine mechanics and accessories, sewing machine control and coordination (sewing in lines, curves and corners), basic hand sewing and stitches, fabric and notion selection, proper cutting techniques, and how to start designing and executing  your own sewing projects. 

Note: The Museum School has Singer Brilliance 6180 brand sewing machines, tools and fabric for students to use but please feel free to bring your own machine and supplies if you’d like.

Intro to Needle Felting: Country Mouse

In this workshop students will create a sweet garden mouse adorned with a flowery hat. Students will learn how to use two armatures to create their mouse as well as sculpt its features using needle felting techniques. This workshop is perfect for beginner and experienced needle felters. All supplies are provided.

Introduction to Gouache: Symbolic Landscape Composition

Gouache is a water-based paint similar to watercolor but with a higher pigment concentration. In this class, students will work with the instructor to learn basic color theory and mixing techniques specific to gouache to create cohesive and vibrant palettes. Unlike traditional landscape painting, which aims for realism, this approach emphasizes the use of simplified shapes and symbols to convey ideas or evoke emotions. Through guided excersises and demonstrations, students will learn to distill complex landscapes into essential elements, exploring the power of abstraction and symbolism in art. All supplies will be provided.

Clay for Beginners

Learn about the basics of working with clay for producing decorative and functional pottery. Students will learn the process and various techniques for going from an idea to a 3 dimensional completed glazed piece. The class will cover slab and coil construction as well as an introduction to throwing pieces on the wheel. An overview of decorating and glazing techniques for completing the piece will be presented.  All firings will be done by the museum in an electric kiln and all materials will be provided.
