Camera Basics for DSLR and Mirrorless Cameras

This class is designed for beginning to intermediate photographers who have purchased a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera or a mirrorless camera. Course participants will explore the specific features of DSLR or mirrorless cameras, as well as general photographic skills and techniques to make great pictures.

Ages: Adults (15+) / All levels

Required Supplies: Students are required to bring have a DSLR camera or mirrorless camera as well as their camera’s manual. A fully charged battery and memory card are also necessary for class. Any lenses that they own should also be brought to class.

Studio Photography: Dramatic Portraiture

Wednesdays, September 17 – October 1 / 6 – 9 pm

Explore dramatic portrait photography in a professional studio environment. Students will work with live models in a variety of period and dramatic costumes and will experiment with various qualities of light, including natural and artificial, framing and composition and variations in the photographic environment. NOTE: Classes are taught off site at Jeff Ross’ Studio.

DSLR Camera Basics

Saturdays, September 6 – September 13 / 10:30 am – 2:30 pm

This class is designed for beginning to intermediate photographers who have purchased a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera, which is a camera with removable lenses. Course participants will explore the specific features of DSLR cameras, as well as general photographic skills and techniques to make great pictures.

Photography: Speed Lighting

Class Meets: Thursdays, August 14 to August 28

This photography class is for students who own, or are planning to own, a Speedlight for their cameras (The small flash that can be attached to the top of the camera). Students will learn how to create better light on and off the camera with this lighting accessory and go from flat ugly lighting, to creating light that can compete with expensive studio lighting. This class is perfect for those just learning about lighting, and professionals who are looking to add the power of Speedlights to their skill set.

Ages: 15 and Up / All Levels

Required Supplies: A Speedlight is not required for the first week of class, but recommended. For the second week of class, Students will need to bring a Speedlight to class for the second week. Students will also need to bring their DSLR cameras, manuals, additional lenses, charged batteries for both Speedlights and cameras, as well as memory cards.

Additional Materials: Students may also want to purchase a light stand(s), umbrella adaptors, and a umbrella for their Speedlights. However, students may want to hold off on purchasing gear until after the first week of classes’ gear overview, so they know what to buy and not to buy. These additional materials would be used during the second week of class, and are not necessary for the first week.

Food Photography for the Foodie

Class Meets: Wednesdays, August 27 to September 3

Foodies will explore lighting, composition, and food styling in a professional studio environment with local professional photographer, Jeff Ross. This class is great for food bloggers, restaurateurs, both amateur and professional chefs and photographers or just your average foodie! Students will need a digital SLR camera with manual control for shutter speed and aperture, computer (home or laptop) with image editing software, and a flash drive to transport images.

NOTE: Classes are taught off site at Jeff Ross’ professional studio and limited to ten students.

The Environmental Portrait: Shooting on Location

Class Meets: Wednesdays, June 4 – June 18

Explore portrait photography techniques for shooting on location (as opposed to in a studio setting). Students will work with live models and will experiment with light, including natural and artificial, posing, site selection, permissions and setting a mood within the photographic environment.

NOTE: Classes are taught off site at Jeff Ross’ Studio and at selected locations (registered students will be given location list).
