150 Year Transcontinental Railroad Commemoration | Panel Discussion and Ceremony
Join us at the Nevada Museum of Art to commemorate the historic 150th Anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. Artists Zhi Lin and Hung Liu will join Andrea and John C. Deane Senior Curator and Deputy Director Ann M. Wolfe to discuss their artworks made in response to the sacrifices of Chinese Railroad workers who raced to complete the rail line that would unite America from east to west in 1869. Directly following the presentation, a ceremonial gathering will take place at the exact time 150 years ago that the Golden Spike was hammered into the last rail at Promontory, Utah by Leland Stanford. The program will include remarks followed by the recitation of the names of over 800 known Chinese railroad workers between 2:27 pm and 2:47 pm—a twenty minute period during which the original telegram announcing the completion of the railroad was sent from Utah to Washington DC in 1869. This honorific recitation will be accompanied by the playing of traditional Chinese instruments by Todd Green.
The ceremony and panel discussion will take place in the Nightingale Sky Room with sweeping views of the Sierra Nevada.

Dust Horizon: Dance, Film and Landscape Inspired by the Poetry of Gailmarie Pahmeier
Inspired by the poetry of Gailmarie Pahmeier, this multi-media dance performance presented by Collateral & Co. Contemporary Dance Company and the Nevada Museum of Art explores the landscape of Nevada through choreography, photography, and film.
Gailmarie Pahmeier is a recipient of Nevada Art Council’s esteemed Project Fellowship Grant and has spent the last year in residency at a variety of Nevada state parks composing narratives about her experience focusing on the people and environments she encounters in these often remote places. Inspired by Pahmeier’s writings, Collateral & Co. traveled to three Nevada State Parks: Washoe Lake State Park, Wild Horse Reservoir, and Valley of Fire, to record and document movement in the landscapes. In this special event, Pahmeier’s poetry combined with Collateral & Co. live and recorded movement will bring the vast and ever-changing beauty of Nevada’s landscape to the Nevada Museum of Art for two multi-sensory nights of poetry, film and dance.
Collateral & Co. Contemporary Dance Company was founded in May 2017 when Founder and Artistic Director, Caitlin McCarty, returned home to the Reno, Nevada area after working for New York-based Gallim Dance. Collateral & Co. explores the intricacies of the human experience and investigates the nuances of everyday life. The company recently welcomed, Leslie Balzer, also a native Nevadan, as their Assistant Artistic Director.
Doors open at 1 pm with cash bar.
