Barbara Stein on Annie Montague Alexander and the Rise of Science in the American West

Sponsored by our partner, the DRI Research Foundation.

Annie Montague Alexander (1867–1950) was an intrepid explorer, amateur naturalist, skilled markswoman, philanthropist, farmer, and founder of two natural history museums at UC Berkeley. Working with scientists, Alexander joined research expeditions in Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, Northern California, the Eastern Sierra, and Nevada–where she took part in the 1905 Saurian Expedition and ichthyosaur excavation in the West Humboldt Range.

Barbara R. Stein offers a portrait of this remarkable woman, a pioneer who helped shape the world of science, yet whose name has been little known until now.

BRDI Presents: Llisa Demetrios

Best known for their “mid-century modern” furniture designs, Charles and Ray Eames epitomized the modern era. Their hands-on, learning-by-doing process explored the possibilities of materials new and old. The Eames often visited with their grandchildren; putting them in their short films and taking them to their exhibits. These playful interactions were also valuable lessons on the design process. Join Llisa Demetrios for a showing of vintage images and short film screenings from the archives while sharing stories about lessons learned from her grandparents, Charles and Ray Eames.  She will also talk about her own studio where she works in bronze and wood, and where they continue to make her mother’s designs.

Social hour at 5:00 pm, event begins at 6:00 pm

Sponsorship for the 2018 BRDI Series is provided by Henriksen Butler and Herman Miller, the Nevada Arts Council, and Northern Nevada AIA
