Artists | Writers | Environments (A | W | E) Grant Program

CAE1119

Summary Note

This one-year pilot program developed by The Center for Art + Environment at Nevada Museum of Art, was meant to encourage artists and writers to work as teams on art + environment projects. Materials include applications, correspondence, images, and in-depth applications from the five finalists.

Biographical Note

The Center for Art + Environment was established by Nevada Museum of Art in 2009 with three goals:
1. To encourage the creation of artworks expressing the interactions between people and their natural, built, and virtual environments;
2. To convene artists, scholars, and communities to document, research, and analyze such artworks;
3. To increase public knowledge of these creative and scholarly endeavors.

The CA+E developed a trial grant program to test the efficacy of addressing all three goals by awarding funds through competitive application for artist-writer collaborations. The program was developed by CA+E Director William Fox and administered by Rosalind Bedell, the Associate Director of Advancement and Volunteer Programs. The decision was made to award the $10,000 available to a single collaboration in order to attract the highest possible caliber of applications. The program was discontinued after the pilot in order to shift emphasis on funding CA+E Research Fellows, a program initiated the following year that was able to support similar projects, as well host a broader range of scholarly and curatorial activities.
