Alteronce Gumby’s multidisciplinary practice explores abstraction through the transformative possibilities of color, light, and material. Drawing connections between the mysteries of the cosmos and ideas of Blackness, Gumby has developed a distinctive visual language that investigates color as both a physical phenomenon and a cultural construct. Inspired by color theory, cosmology, astrophysics, and aspects of the natural world, his work examines how color shapes perception and how it shifts through changing conditions of light and space.
Moving beyond traditional painting techniques, Gumby creates richly textured works using unconventional materials including resin, glass, gemstones, and mineral pigments. Embedded within sculptural forms and irregularly shaped canvases, these materials refract and reflect light, creating optical effects that alter the experience of the objects as viewers move around them.
Bringing together new and existing works, this exhibition traces Gumby’s ongoing exploration of color as a dynamic force that connects the material world to broader questions of identity, perception, and the universe. Born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in 1985, Gumby lives and works in New York.
