Richard T. Walker:
the cadence of a meandering thought

Robert Z. Hawkins Gallery | Floor 3

Consisting of approximately a dozen works of art, Richard T. Walker: the cadence of a meandering thought is the artist’s first solo museum exhibition in the US. Originally from England, Walker lives in San Francisco, where he has developed an innovative practice over the course of two decades that explores the intersection of sculpture, sound, and photography.

Walker’s work uniquely combines his talents as a musician, photographer, performer, and sculptor to make innovative installations and objects. His practice often involves venturing alone into remote landscapes with a musical instrument to perform before, and sometimes with, the natural world. Instead of asking what can the land do for me or how can I dominate it, Walker embodies the position of what can I, as a human being, do for the land and how can I honor it?

Walker is a recent recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, which enabled him to realize his idea of working with robotic and electrical experts to automate and streamline the connection between a keyboard, slide projectors, and a screen. This new installation will be featured in the exhibition for the first time. Additionally, Walker will construct a score between each of the individual works that possess a musical component, turning the entire installation into a singular musical composition.
