Sit and Sketch
Join E.L. Cord Museum School instructor, Jerry Stinson, in a fun and casual setting exploring basic drawing materials. Weekly drop-in drawing sessions inside the newly renovated E.L. Cord Museum School will give participants of all ages an opportunity to experiment with a variety of dry media, sketch from arranged still lifes or to draw freely. Participates are welcome to bring personal sketchbooks, though drawing materials and paper will be provided. Reservations are not necessary. FREE
Tahoe Rim Trail Association Hike: Van Sickle Bi-State Park/Kingsbury Grade
Explore scenic locations in a series of guided hikes presented in partnership with the Tahoe Rim Trail Association and the Nevada Museum of Art. Long-time Museum docent, experienced trail builder and crew leader, Bob Anderson will reveal and discuss scenic highlights along the trail as they relate to the artists and artworks featured in the exhibition Tahoe: A Visual History. Pre-registration is required. Registration closes three-days in advance of the scheduled hike.
Van Sickle Bi-state Park/Kingsbury Grade: Group will meet in Van Sickle Bi-state park at the trailhead. TRTA van will shuttle group to the Kingsbury South trailhead. A 3.5 mile (mostly downhill) hike will include discussions on the history of Kingsbury Grade and the Van Sickle family.

SOLD OUT: Tahoe RimTrail Association Hike: Donner Summit

Explore scenic locations in a series of guided hikes presented in partnership with the Tahoe Rim Trail Association and the Nevada Museum of Art. Long-time Museum docent, experienced trail builder and crew leader, Bob Anderson will reveal and discuss scenic highlights along the trail as they relate to the artists and artworks featured in the exhibition Tahoe: A Visual History. Donner Summit: Group will meet at the Pacific Crest Trail trailhead on old US40. A 3/4 mile hike will lead the group to a scenic overlook of Donner Lake. Hikers will look at the work of Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Hill, Timothy O’Sullivan and will enjoy learning more about the history of Donner Pass and Donner Lake. We will explore the areas that the artists referenced did their work, then hike another 3/4 mile to see the site-specific installation “Circle” by Richard Long.”

Mt. Rose Wilderness: Group will meet at Mt. Rose Summit parking lot. TRTA will provide truck and drive to assist with a car shuttle up to the service road radio towers. Hikers will enjoy a 2.5 mile downhill trek to Snow Pond. Discussions will include the history and photography of Dr. Frederic Church and the geology of the Mt. Rose area. A TRTA truck will meet the group at Snow Pond to shuttle hikers back up to retrieve vehicles.

Echo Summit/Echo Lake: Group will meet at the TRTA office in Stateline. Directions will be provided to registrants 2-3 days prior to hike. Hikers will look at and discuss the photography of Charles Weeds as it relates to Johnson Grade and Hawley Grade. A short drive to Echo Lake trail head will then start the 3-mile round trip hike and an exploration of the work of artist Anne Brigman and her work in Desolation Wilderness.

JoAnne Northrup and Betsabee Romero: A Dialogue About En Transíto
Mexican artist Betsabee Romero discusses themes of delight, history, food, and literature that inform the installations in her exhibition En Transíto in a dialogue with Director of Contemporary Art Inititatives, JoAnne Norhrup. Learn about the themes of magical realism that inform her artwork commemorating the life and work of Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and the themes of Latin American life and art informing her installations.
Lee Gibson on Reimagining the Virginia Street Corridor
Efforts to connect creative communities through art, design, and transit are blossoming across the country, and Reno-Sparks is doing similar work right in line with these nationwide efforts. RTC Executive Director Lee Gibson talks about the creative threads informing the Virginia Street Corridor transit project to improve community access to the creative districts near Midtown and Downtown Reno.
The Ecologies of Erika Harrsch’s Monarch Butterflies
Before Erika Harrsch’s exhibition The Butterfly Paradigm closes, join UNR lepidopterists (butterfly scientists) for a discussion of the ecology, habitat, behaviors, and challenges facing Monarch butterflies as a species, a key element of her artistic practice.
Connecting with Nature in an Urban Environment
The Nature Conservancy collaborated with Downtown Project, Iowa State University and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas designers to build a 120-square-foot parklet in Las Vegas. The parklet—a tiny intervention called “The Waiting Game” in the downtown district—is a public place for relaxation and enjoyment that transforms a parking space at 180 South 6th Street, near Carson Avenue, into a slice of public urban space where people can come into contact with nature through the parklet’s plantings, have a picnic, play a game, and learn about nearby natural areas and wildlife through concrete engravings. Learn about this project, and join a conversation about how to do more of this kind of innovative place-based creative expression in Reno.
