Book Arts: Uncial Calligraphy

Tuesdays, September 5 – 26 / 6 – 9 pm

Uncial is a strong, clear, and beautiful calligraphic hand which dates from Greece in the 2nd century. It became the most important book-script of the late Roman era, and came to its flowering in the 5th century. We will look at historical forms, and letter our own contemporary version of these sturdy, round majuscules.

Supply list:

  •  Notebook (if you wish to take notes)
  • 3mm Brause nib
  • Nib holder
  • Higgins Eternal ink
  • Strathmore 300 series sketch paper, tape top pad is preferable) Ink dishes (bottle cap on a saucer would work ok) Baby wipes, apron, rag, and chair cushion if you want
