Impossible Light

The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge opened in 1936 and was almost immediately overshadowed by the Golden Gate Bridge, which opened less than a year later. A dull workhorse next to a glamorous star, it seemed the Bay Bridge would never outshine its sister to the north. Artist Leo Villareal’s light installation on the Bay Bridge changed that almost overnight.
