Biographical Note

Patricia Watts is an independent curator who earned an M.A. in entrepreneurial exhibit design/museum studies studio program with an emphasis on curating and arts administration from California State Fullerton University in 1993. After working on a museum concept for the Milken Family Foundation with team of 24 museum professionals exploring the creative process, developing ideas for a garden art-in-nature program at the Museum of Creativity in Santa Monica, CA, and holding a series of administrative positions, she became the Chief Curator for the Sonoma County Museum from 2005-2008.

Watts has curated over 20 exhibitions including MAKE:CRAFT (2010) at the Ben Maltz Gallery, Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles; Hybrid Fields (2006) at the Sonoma County Museum, Santa Rosa, CA; and produced a site-specific temporary public art installation entitled Windsock Currents (2005) on Crissy Field in the Presidio, San Francisco, for UN World Environment Day. She is currently working on a statewide residency project in New Mexico entitled Getting Off the Planet (2011-2013).

In 1997 she founded the nonprofit art & environment organization Ecoartspace, a website dedicated to art and environment issues. The New York curator Amy Lipton joined the organization in 1999. Amy Lipton began her career as a gallerist in New York City from 1986-1995. She has curated numerous exhibitions, organizes and participates on panel discussions, lectures on art and the environment and has written for various publications. Recent exhibitions include Down to Earth: Artists Create Edible Landscapes for the Schuylkill Center (2009) in Philadelphia and Into the Trees (2008) for the Fields Sculpture Park at Art Omi in Ghent, NY. Earlier curatorial projects include Imaging the River at the Hudson River Museum, Yonkers, NY (2004) and Ecovention, (160-page catalogue) at the Contemporary Art Center, Cincinnati, Ohio (2002). She organized Human/Nature: Art and the Environment with The Nature Conservancy, a series of discussions bringing artists and scientists together (2003-08). Lipton was formerly Director of The Fields Sculpture Park at Omi International Arts Center. She received her BFA from California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, CA.

Scope and Content

Patricia Watts is an independent curator who in 1997 founded the nonprofit art & environment organization Ecoartspace, a website dedicated to art and environmental issues. New York City curator Amy Lipton joined Watts in 1999, and together they have curated numerous exhibitions, participated on panels, given lectures at universities, developed programs and curricula, and written essays for publications from both the East and West Coasts. They advocate for artists whose projects range from ecological restoration to functional artworks, from temporal works created outdoors with nature to eco-social interventions in the urban public sphere.
